Pretty Girls Breakers! from eastasiasoft and Zoo Corporation takes the series into brick breaking territory. For this classic arcade-style release, you’ll play as a twin-tailed fighter wielding a beam saber, which can be used to hit back the ball towards the bricks that must be destroyed. The game features more than 20 battle stages, where you’ll need to chain strike after strike to destroy all blocks before you’re defeated.
There are different types of blocks for you to destroy with the ball. Normal blocks can be destroyed by hitting them with a ball or if they’re hit by an enemy’s bullet. Some special metal-looking blocks can’t be destroyed, so you need to follow up the ball’s trajectory to be ready to hit it back towards another block. There are blocks with a green circle on top that will always unleash a power-up. There are indestructible blocks with rotating bars, which will hit the ball back. And then, there’s the turret block which will fire bullets at you. Enemies will have a similar shape in general but will have different attack patterns. You can swing at these bullets and send them back to destroy bricks or defeat enemies.
You must clear the stage by moving your character to hit the ball back to be able to clear all destructible blocks and enemies. By hitting the ball back at the right time, you will get a smash hit, which will boost the ball’s power, making it possible to easily destroy harder blocks. If the ball falls past your character, you will lose a life. If your character is hit by the projectiles of enemies, you will lose a life. If all of your lives are gone, then it’s game over. Fail to clear a stage within the set time limit, and you will also fail. By clearing each stage, your character’s costume will start to change, and you’ll get a new costume added to the dressing room section.
As you destroy blocks, you might end up releasing a power-up that can be collected by touching it with your character. These include the wide flipper, which increases the size and swing range of your character, double ball, which will add an extra ball to the playing field, barrier, which makes the ball rebound back into play for a few times, slow ball, which will slow down the movement of the ball for a short period of time, shot, which fires bullets from your character, and bomb, which will shoot a bomb that destroys the surrounding blocks of the one it hits.
Pretty Girls Breakers! has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy, and it’s also a Cross-Buy release, which means you’ll get both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions with your purchase, each one featuring a separate trophy list. There are no missable trophies for this game since all trophies will unlock as you complete each stage, unlocking the 5 Silver and 10 Gold trophies on your path towards having a new Platinum trophy in your collection.
If you’re looking for a fun arcade-style brick breaking game on PlayStation, then Pretty Girls Breakers! is a good option. The game does feature some outfits for characters that might rub some people the wrong way, but the game is Rated T for Teen, so you can get an idea of what to expect. Pretty Girls Breakers! is out as a Cross-Buy title for only $6.99.
