In My Shadow from Playbae Games and OverGamez is a PlayStation 4 puzzle platformer where light sources and shadows are crucial. You play as Bella, who must go on a journey through her memories in order to make amends with her past. You will get to learn more about her story and how she grew up to be the woman she is today by solving the over 50 puzzles that are split over four different rooms as you experience her changing relationships with her family members.

In My Shadow Review - 1

Each of the levels you’ll play for In My Shadow features more than one potential solution since the objects you’ll interact with can be placed in a variety of ways that will still allow you to collect all memories and reach the end of the level, even if you don’t perfectly place an object at this or that spot. Since this is a puzzle platformer, that means that the light sources in each level will have an effect on the shadow that each object casts, which is why you’ll have to move – and sometimes rotate – some of them so that you have a way of avoiding any hazards.

In My Shadow Review - 2

When in the platforming segments, you’ll control your character with the left analog stick, jumping with the X button as you try to collect memories and avoid hazards before you can make it to the other side of the room and complete the level. Press the Square button, and you’ll switch things around so that you can control objects to create the shadows that you’ll use as platforms. You can switch between objects with the L1 and R1 buttons and can use the L2 and R2 buttons to slow down the speed at which you drag them so that you can place them just right. Later on, you’ll be able to rotate some objects with the right analog stick.

As expected, a single hit is all it takes for your character to be sent back to the start of the level, and since there are many sharp objects in each stage, there’s going to be a lot of trial and error in your future! Fail to make a jump because you jumped too soon and landed on a spike, and you’ll be able to readjust that for your second try. If you miscalculated the area a moving set of spikes has claimed as its own, then you’ll have to do it again and maybe move some objects around to lower the height of a platform or have it set at a different spot so that you can clear the jump while avoiding the spikes.

Trophy hunters will be pleased to learn that In My Shadow features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy to add to their collection. The list includes 6 Bronze trophies, 7 Silver trophies, and 8 Gold trophies. As for what you’ll need to do, do be aware there’s a trophy for completing the game in less than 3 hours – which is doable – so if you end up stumped in too many puzzles, you’ll have to replay the game. Sure, you can skip puzzles if you just can’t find the right solution, but there’s also a trophy for completing all levels in each of the four rooms without skipping any of them, as well as a trophy for not skipping any of the puzzles. Along with those, there are puzzles for clearing a specific number of puzzles in each room without dying. The rest of the puzzles include watching all memory snippets without skipping any of them, completing the game, skipping 10 times, dying 100 times, and reading a special message after the game is over.

In My Shadow Review - Story

In My Shadow is a fun puzzle game in which light sources and shadows are just as important as the memories you’ll uncover by reliving snippets of Bella’s past. The game has a nice difficulty curve, introducing new elements at a steady pace as not to overwhelm gamers. Add a Platinum trophy, and you have a game that is easy to recommend on PlayStation 4. In My Shadow is out on PlayStation 4 with an $11.99 asking price.
