Buck Bradley Comic Adventure from RedDeerGames takes you to the post-apocalyptic world of Terrastramba, destroyed by toxic pollution. Said toxic pollution changes people into mutants, and this happens to Ciroki, friend of the titular Buck Bradley, who ends up transformed into a monster! This happened at the worst of times since it seemed like she was about to confess her love for Buck! As expected, the toxic cloud continues to mutate more and more people, and all hell breaks loose.
As the name suggests, Buck Bradley Comic Adventure is presented as an interactive comic book of sorts. You’ll be getting some rather nice artwork – I really dig the game’s art style – as you explore each location, interact with the objects you find and the people you meet, as you try to survive and find a way to cure Ciroki so that she can turn back to the way she used to be. Interact with other characters, and you’ll get to pick the dialogue you want to use from the available word balloon encased options – see? An interactive comic book! Your adventure will start a year after Ciroki has been turned into a monster, and the world has fallen into pieces.
This point and click adventure game can be played with the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or by making good use of the console’s touchscreen when playing in Portable or Tabletop Mode – or if enjoying this one on a Nintendo Switch Lite. You can move a cursor around the screen and press the A button to interact as needed. Press the A button twice, and you’ll pick up, move, put down, or speak, depending on the situation. To move between locations, double press the A button when the cursor is on the wheelbarrow-sidecar.
You’ll have a bag where all of the stuff you collect will be placed. Access your bag by pressing the Y button, grab an object, and then you can just drag and drop them on top of this or that. On top of this, some objects will need to be combined by dragging and dropping them on top of each other so that you can then use them to solve a puzzle. If you’re ever wondering what you need to do next, just double press the A button when the cursor is on top of Ciroki to get a summary of the goals.
To give you an idea of the type of puzzles you’ll be solving during your time with Buck Bradley Comic Adventure, and as to not spoil things that happen later in the story, allow me to discuss the first couple of puzzles you’ll find in the game. After riding for a while, Buck and Ciroki find someone tied up to a tree, who Ciroki suggests they should help. There’s a mutated cow’s skull on the ground, and double-clicking on it will give you access to its upper jaw. Once that’s in your inventory, if you combine it with Ciroki, she’ll be able to chew her way through the ropes!
Next up, you’ll be tasked with helping someone’s farm. With the whole post-apocalyptic thing and the world as we know it changes forever, having a farm when you don’t have access to electricity, heat, or water can be quite the predicament! How are you going to grow plants when the land is dry, and there’s no way to water seeds or nurture them? How are you going to survive through the harsh winter without any heat? At least there’s one solution to this predicament: manure! Manure from the cows can be burned to create a heat source, and that will at least solve one of the problems. What are you going to do about the rest? First, you’ll need to find a way to feed the cows so that they produce manure, but there’s the whole issue about how they now are sort of carnivores. Can you solve this predicament?
Buck Bradley Comic Adventure is a fun point and click adventure game with a solid art style that pays homage to the classics in the genre. It features several puzzles to solve, some of which will probably make you scratch your head for a bit. Just think a bit outside the box, and you’ll be able to see the credits roll in no time! Based on your experience with point and click adventure games, you should be able to complete this one in an hour and change. Buck Bradley Comic Adventure is out on Nintendo Switch with a budget price of only $6.99.
