Square Keeper from JanduSoft and KanakStudio is a turn-based puzzle dungeon crawler in which actions are executed by way of cards. Check our Square Keepers review!

Square Keeper from JanduSoft and KanakStudio is a turn-based puzzle dungeon crawler in which actions are executed by way of cards. You’re trapped in a dungeon, and you must escape before it’s too late. Each room you explore will have enemies to defeat, traps to avoid… or both! You’ll be taking on 40 levels as you make the most of the cards you’re dealt for each scenario. Every move counts, since

Square Keeper Review - 1

You’ll start each stage with a set number of cards. You’ll select them by switching between them with the left analog stick or the D-Pad and pressing the X button. After this, select the direction in which the card will be executed. You can also deselect a card by pressing the Circle button. If you want to move, then select a boot card and then the direction in which you’ll move. The number on the card will dictate how many squares you’ll be able to move. Some cards can be executed diagonally, which is very important since moving one square diagonally could be the missing piece in the puzzle that is reaching the exit.

Things start off easy enough since you’ll only have to worry about moving around each level with your boot cards as you use your swords cards to defeat the many slimes on your path. You’ll soon run into spiders, which you need to attack from the sides or behind, or else they’ll take a bite at you and kill you. Sword cards will allow your character to attack and move in a single action. But you’ll also have to use spears that can attack one or more squares without moving your character so that you can start to prepare for your next action.

Square Keeper Review - 4

Square Keeper is a Cross-Buy title, which means you’ll get both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game. Since each one has its own trophy list, and with the game offering a Platinum trophy, that means that if you have a PlayStation 5 console, you can work on adding two Platinum trophies to your collection! The trophies will unlock after you defeat a slime, a spider, a goblin, or a rat, defeat two enemies with a single move, defeat three enemies with a single move, use a trap to defeat an enemy, and complete pages one through five of the adventure book from which you select each stage.

Square Keeper Review - 2

Square Keeper is a turn-based puzzle dungeon crawler in which you’ll use cards to perform the actions needed to defeat enemies as you try to escape from each stage. With 40 stages to complete, a handful of card types to use in battle, and a Platinum trophy to work on, Square Keeper is a minimalist puzzle game that ends up being fun. The game is out as a Cross-Buy title, so your $4.99 purchase will get you both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own trophy list to work on.
