Aquadine from Ratalaika Games and SoftColors is a visual novel where you’ll learn about the ancient titular underwater city. After his mother was hospitalized for an unknown disease, Robin Liyun started to work as a part-time gondolier to try and earn some extra money, doing this under the alias Ciel. One night after his shift is over, a voice lures him from the distance. What does he find? A mermaid! This can’t be real, right? What follows is a coming-of-age story where you’ll meet a colorful cast of characters.
If a mermaid is real, then that means that the stories are real, and that Aquadine is real! During the first part of the game, you’ll get to learn more about Aquadine and the main characters. After completing this segment, you’ll be presented with a character selection screen, where you’ll be able to select which of their stories you’d like to dive further into. In the end, you’ll experience all four stories, which will allow you to unlock the special Memories option in the main menu, which leads to the game’s true ending.
If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll realize that, unlike the majority of the visual novels you’re probably played by now, Aquadine does not have you make choices at different moments of the story so that you can take on a new branching path, or get one of the different endings. Aquadine is indeed a visual novel, so you’ll be experiencing the story that the game has to offer, and all you’ll be doing is experiencing the story until you’ve seen it all, unlocking all trophies along the way.
The trophy list for Aquadine is split into 2 Bronze trophies, 7 Silver trophies, and 9 Gold trophies. As long as you play all four of the separate – but connected – stories in Aquadine, you’ll get all of the trophies since, as mentioned before, there are no choices to make along the way. And since Aquadine is a Cross-Buy title, your purchase will get you both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, so you’ll be able to add two Platinum trophies to your collection as long as you have a PS5 console. You won’t be needing a trophy guide for this one!
Aquadine is a charming visual novel that will take you on a journey that should last around 7-8 hours or so as you explore the main story path, the four interconnected stories, and the final prologue available on the main menu under the Memories section. Aquadine is available as a Cross-Buy title with a $19.99 asking price, giving you access to both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, with each one having its own trophy list.
This Aquadine review is based on a PlayStation 5 copy provided by Ratalaika Games.
