Super Sunny Island from Ratalaika Games and lightUP is a 2D platformer in which you’ll take control of a penguin. Check our Super Sunny Island review!

Super Sunny Island from Ratalaika Games and lightUP is a 2D platformer in which you’ll take control of a penguin. He’s Sunny and is going to be exploring a new island as he uses his water gun to defeat the many enemies in his path towards the boss fight for each area. There are five summer-themed locations to explore, and each section will have all levels unlocked from the start, so you can play through them in any order.

Super Sunny Island Review - 1

To battle the boss, you’ll need to collect some special large coins to open the door leading to the fight. To beat a boss, you’ll need to pay attention to its movement and attack patterns so that you can find the right time to attack it so that you can deal enough damage to defeat it before you run out of water. Once you do beat a boss, you’ll gain a power-up that will improve your water gun – things such as a special spread shot that you unleash by charging up your attack or making it possible for your gun to fire over a longer distance.

The controls are very simple. You’ll be controlling Sunny with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the X button and shooting with the Square button. Since you’re using a water gun, you’ll have to collect water to refill it, either by grabbing water pickups or by diving into a body of water. You’ll also need to collect the three golden keys in each stage so that you can grab the special coin inside the treasure chest. To improve your odds, grab enough food to get an extra piece of gear to protect yourself, or grab the special power-up that instantly levels you up.

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy. You’ll have to work on unlocking 11 Gold trophies in total, and since the game is Cross-Buy, you’ll get both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one has its own trophy list, so those of you who own a PlayStation 5 console can get two Platinum trophies for their collection. The objectives are simple since you’ll have to collect a lot of food, defeat several enemies, collect 30 special coins, and defeat the first two bosses in the game.

Super Sunny Island Review - 3

Super Sunny Island is a colorful but basic 2D platformer on PlayStation in which you’ll play as the titular Sunny, defeating everyone on its path with a water gun. This one feels a bit too similar to Barry the Bunny, another game from this indie dev and publisher combo, and as you can tell from our review, that’s not good news. Super Sunny Island is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $4.99 purchase will give you both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own trophy list.
