The new 3D adventure Asterix and Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia from Microids and OSome Studio is ready to go on PlayStation 5. It’s the year 50 B.C. in this top-down action game, and Gaul is occupied by the Romans… except for the one small village packed with the indomitable Gauls that are still putting up a good fight. Meanwhile, off the coast of Britannia in Hibernia – what is nowadays known as Ireland – Keratine, the daughter of chief Whiskitonix, has called for the help of Asterix and Obelix to try and repel the Roman invasion, as well as recover her father’s ram with golden horns.
There are six new worlds to explore, and you’ll need to smash every single Roman on your path as you play as Asterix and Obelix in a game that can be enjoyed by up to four players at the same time. And yes, that does mean that someone will be controlling a palette-swapped Asterix or Obelix, as you can see from the trailer and screens for this Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia review.
To control Asterix and Obelix, you’ll use the left analog stick to move them around, using light attacks with the Square button and dashing with the X button. Dashing can be used to gain some distance between enemies and our heroes, as well as to cross over small or large gaps. If you press and hold down the X button, you’ll be able to dash over longer distances, so do keep that in mind! If you press and hold the Triangle button, you’ll unleash a heavy attack as soon as you release the button.
By using the Circle button, you’ll be able to grab and pick up stuff, which can be used to attack or activate switches. Pick up a leg of boar and then swing away as needed! You can also press the R2 button to throw whatever it is that you’re carrying. As you battle against the Romans and defeat the many individuals foolish enough to attack Asterix and Obelix, you’ll build up energy for the Ultimate Attack bar. Once you have enough energy, you can press the L2 button. And if you’re playing this one on your own, you can switch between Asterix and Obelix by pressing the L1 button.
Every level will have four hidden Gold helmets for you to find. And for each Roman camp segment that you play through, you can aim to get a Bronze, Silver, or Gold medal for your efforts. Each of these segments will have specific parameters to beat, so you’ll have to complete a level within the allotted time, complete it with the best score possible, and finish with the least health lost, which will prove to be the hardest one of the medals. There will also be a special medal for you to gain. These include, for example, beating X number of Romans with Romans or using rubber circles to hit as many Romans as possible.
The whole game is fully voice-acted, which is always a nice element when the cast does a good job, which is the case for the cast of Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia. The cast includes Brian Bowles as Asterix, George Weightman as Obelix, and Roisin Rankin as Keratine, taking care of bringing to life our two main heroes and their distant cousin who is in need of help to drive away the Romans and recover the ram with the golden horns.
The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum for you to add to your collection. The list includes 6 Bronze trophies, 14 Silver trophies, and 5 Gold trophies. You’ll have to complete each of the six levels, grab all collectibles, defeat a Roman with his own shield, beat a centurion before he calls for help, send three Roman soldiers flying at the same time, destroy 100 breakables, defeat a Roman by throwing a fish at him, beat a Roman with a musical instrument, get time medals, get all health medals, and get all the medals in the game. This is a Cross-Buy release, so your purchase will give you both the PS4 and the PS5 versions, and each one has its own trophy list.
Asterix and Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is a fun top-down adventure in which up to four gamers will control the titular duo – and some palette-swapped versions – to try and beat the Romans that have invaded Hibernia and stolen Whiskitonix’s ram with golden horns. Asterix and Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is Rated E10+ and is available as a Cros-Buy title, so your $39.99 purchase will give you access to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
