Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy from Akupara Games and Curious Fate is a tactics-style turn-based RPG on PlayStation. It follows the journey of one Huxley Rhinehart who must do whatever it takes to protect the land against the evil forces of an invading army. He won’t be alone since Max, his trusty dog, will be right there by his side. On top of that, he’ll also be able to recruit other heroes to the cause so that the group can stand a chance against the power of Father Eldritch and the mighty warriors known as the Daughters of Mercy.
Battles offer a grid-based setting where you’ll be able to move around each character, selecting if they should attack, use a skill, or wait until its next turn comes around. You’ll get to learn the basics during the first battle with Huxley while he’s out in search of legendary treasures to bring prosperity to his hometown of Corliss… except he’s only found some muddy rocks and is terribly hungry from all the walking. Luckily, there’s a Lunaberry bush close to his location, so he can easily walk to it and attack it to release the delicious Lunaberries that can be eaten to heal 20 HP.
Unfortunately, as soon as he eats the Lunaberries, he’s ambushed by a monster! It’s a soft-shell spore, and if you’re not careful, it could be the end of Huxley! The good news is that the soft-shell spore is weak against physical attacks, so Huxley can quickly defeat it with his rather large sword. Not Cloud Strife long, but definitely aiming to get there. You can check what attacks are better against an enemy by checking the info on the lower-right corner of the screen, which will let you know its strengths and weaknesses.
You’ll notice this right away when after defeating the previous monster, an armored spore enters the scene. As its name suggests, it will be strong against physical attacks, which is why you’ll need to use a skill. To activate a skill, you’ll need to spend the required SP. It’s then that you’ll be instructed to unleash Huxley’s Storm of Swords, which costs 2 SP and deals enough damage to defeat the armored spore in a single hit, given its 8 HP total. Attacking enemies from behind is also important, since it will allow you to deal a critical hit for a ton of damage.
Items are very important during battles in Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy. Along with the aforementioned Lunaberries that can help a character recover some of its lost health, there are also crucial items such as Divine Intervention. Divine Intervention will allow you to revive one of your units after it runs out of HP and is in a KO status. They will be revived and some of their HP will be healed, so that you can then continue to heal them as they’re given another chance.
As you defeat enemies, your units will gain some XP. Once one of your units has gained enough XP, it will level up. This will boost their stats – HP, SP, attack and defense, as well as its skill and skill defense parameters. As an extra bonus, as soon as a unit levels up, all of its wounds will be healed. That means that, if you time things just right, you could end up fully healing a unit that is almost down for the count, which will help to turn the tide of battle.
You should also pay attention to each map on which you fight, since they will sometimes also contain treasure chests for you to break open! Do know that while its contents will certainly be worth the effort, treasure chests need to be opened by attacking them, which means that you’ll have to spend one of your turns attacking a treasure chest instead of damaging an enemy with your attacks or skills. What can be inside of a treasure chest? You can find valuable items such as heavy meds that heal 50 HP, a bag of coins, or
The coins that you obtain can be spent to purchase items for your group – you can never have too many Divine Interventions in stock! – or to purchase new equipment to boost their stats by way of weapon kits, helmet kits, armor kits, or class handbooks. Class handbooks will also give a character access to the skills of a specific class, so that you can configure your group just like you want it, since each of your characters can equip up to two class handbooks at any given time. There’s also the option of spending coins at the pharmacy where you can find items to permanently boost a character’s stats. Buying an HP booster to permanently increase a character’s HP by one point might not seem like much, but it could be the difference between life or death!
Along with the main story missions that will allow you to progress in the plot for Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy, you can also decide to participate in optional missions. Why? Because doing so will reward you with some extra coins and items, as well as giving your characters some extra XP to eventually level up and boost their stats. On top of this, every optional mission will also have a secret that you need to locate. Doing this is important since you’ll be rewarded with a powerful piece of gear that can be put to good use. You need to find it before defeating all enemies, so be sure to look everywhere!
Trophy-wise, Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. The list includes 4 Bronze trophies, 9 Silver trophies, and 8 Gold trophies. The first trophy to pop will be the one for starting your adventure. Once you get that going, you’ll have to defeat 250, 750, and 1,250 enemies, collecting 2,500 and 100,000 coins, defeating each of the game’s bosses, opening 50 treasure chests, harvesting 50 Lunaberry bushes, obtaining all class handbook types, completing all optional missions, and finding all secrets in said optional missions, to name some examples.
Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy is a fun turn-based RPG with a dose of tactics. It has plenty of content to play, an interesting art style, and a lot of options for customizing your party and their abilities by way of the class handbooks. Completing the optional missions at least once will be a must since the difficulty ramps up at a steady pace and your opponents will grow at a faster pace than you. Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy is available for a $24.99 price, and since it’s a Cross-Buy title, your purchase will give you both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
