Slime’s Journey from Ratalaika Games and lightUp is a colorful 2D platformer set in a fairy tale kingdom. In this land, two slimes were very much in love and lived in a small cabin in the ancient magical forest. Unfortunately, one day while walking through the forest, a powerful shaman approached them since they were the last ingredient he needed for his plan… so he took them away! The good news is that the slimes left an egg behind, and from that egg, a new slime was born! You’ll set out on a quest to save your parents before it’s too late.

Slime’s Journey Review - 1

The game can be played in one of three difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, and Hardcore. For Easy, enemies will have fewer health points, and you’ll have infinite lives. Normal is the default setting, and you’ll still have infinite lives. As for Hardcore, it’s the most challenging of the three difficulty settings since you’ll only have one life, so you need to be extra careful with what you do!

Along with choosing your difficulty setting, you’ll also choose an egg, and then you’ll be ready to go. After hatching from the egg, you’ll be able to choose from six different customization options for your slime so that it can wear a mustache, a bow, a monocle, or a pair of glasses from the three available options – including the always classic pair of glasses with a fake large nose and mustache. Just out of your reach are five hats, and way above them, there’s also a golden crown. Maybe you’ll find a way to reach them later.

As you defeat enemies and open golden chests, you’ll be rewarded with shiny crystals. You can pay a visit to the Witch that will sell you some useful potions in exchange for crystals. The forest is very dangerous for a small slime, with giant snails, giant bees, and other creatures to watch out for. You can always get a free small healing vial to heal some of your lost health, but you should definitely aim to buy the potion that will increase your overall health bar – while also healing your wounds. You can also find additional potions like this one by exploring the world of Slime’s Journey.

The controls are easy to understand since you’ll control your slime with the left analog stick and the D-Pad, jumping with the X button and attacking with the Square button, which is also used for pushing objects after the slime gets stronger. You will get to use a bomb with the Circle button as long as you have enough on you. The Triangle button will be used to access your inventory. As you progress through the game, you’ll get access to special potions that will grant you new abilities that will allow you to reach new areas and find more items and abilities. These include being able to jump higher, swim underwater, as well as the always handy double jump.

As for the trophies, it’s a short list with a Platinum trophy that has 11 Gold trophies for you to add to your collection. And since it’s a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5 console, you can work on the separate PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 trophy lists. The first trophy you’ll get will pop when you exit your egg and try on one of the customization options in your house. After that, the rest will pop as you defeat 50, 100, and 150 enemies, get the potions for the big jump, double jump, swimming, and enhanced shooting rate abilities, open your first golden treasure chest, and collect one of the potions that will increase the slime’s overall health.

Slime’s Journey is a colorful 2D platformer that might feel a bit too easy at times, especially given how powerful – and plentiful – the bombs are, but it’s a good palate cleanser to play between longer games. Slime’s Journey is out with a budget price of $4.99, and since it’s a Cross-Buy title, your purchase will give you both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
