Geometric Feel the Beats from QUByte Interactive and YAW Studios is a neon-infused take on the arcade games of the 1980s. You can play the game in one of three different options: Adventure Mode, Coop Mode, and PVP Mode. As you play through Adventure Mode and complete each stage, you’ll get to level up and earn a new badge. Each stage consists of two missions that you need to complete to move forward. You’ll be graded on your average time – that is, the time between all your play time for all stages – as well as on your hit rate for getting the right geometric hit.
For Coop Mode, you’ll take on the challenges of Adventure Mode alongside a friend to help you survive. PVP flips things by having you compete against a friend. Attack it, and it will be paralyzed for a few seconds, allowing you to complete the mission and boost your score. Your global score will be used to establish your spot on the online leaderboard. Your global score can also be used to obtain improvements for your ship. You can purchase upgrades for your ship so that things can be a bit easier for you.
You’ll control your ship with the left analog stick and can dash with the L1 button. The L2 and R2 buttons will allow you to change ammo as you attack with the X button. This is important because you need to shoot the geometrics of the same color. Shooting a geometric with the wrong color will result in a loss of score. By shooting several geometrics of the same color in a row, you’ll start to build up your multiplier. And if you’re not fast enough and any of them reach the bottom of the screen, you’ll lose points.
Some levels move your ship to the left, right, or upper side of the screen as targets move in from the opposite starting direction. It’s then that you’ll have to use the right analog stick to teleport your ship to other spots in order to get the best shot angle. Some geometrics might change color, so you’ll need to be careful when shooting at them. There are also larger geometrics that will release shurikens when hit with the wrong color. If your ship is hit by one, you’ll lose some points.
There are also special shapes called geometric brains that behave a bit differently than the other geometrics you’ll run into. Some geometrics will also have a shield – which you can tell from their white colors – and you will need to first destroy whichever shape is powering the shield to lower it for long enough for you to destroy the geometric. This shield will also come into play during boss fights.
And once you manage to survive everything else, you’ll end up going against a mega geometric, which is the boss for that particular set of stags. You will need to defeat it by shooting down the first target geometrics to remove his shield, then the second one to defeat it. The count can be reset if you shoot with the wrong color if the mega geometric is hit by a shuriken thrown by a geometric brain, or from a big explosive geometric. Beat the mega geometric, and you’ll be able to move to the next set of stages.
The Square, Triangle, Circle, and R1 buttons will be used to activate the upgrades that you purchase with your global score. There are also some power-ups to consider as you play. You can collect these by shooting at the glowing stars that will pop every now and then. These power-ups include slowing down all falling geometrics so that you can have a better chance of clearing out the screen, a mimic one that will turn all targets on the screen into the main target you need to shoot to complete a mission, and even a mighty atomic bomb that will make every single geometric on the screen explode.
The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. The list has 6 Bronze trophies, 8 Silver trophies, and 7 Gold trophies, and they will pop as you complete the first 10 Mega Geometries in Adventure Mode, complete the first 10 Mega Geometries in Coop Mode, and give the PVP Mode a try. Because of the game’s nature, none of the trophies are missable, but they will require a solid time commitment on your end.
Geometric Feel the Beats is a neon-infused arcade-style game that sets out to give us an action-packed experience with a dash of a puzzler feel. Unfortunately, the whole thing falls flat upon execution since you’ll spend a long time in each level waiting for the right geometrics of the right color to pop into the screen to complete the objective and move on to the next level. Upgrades are terribly expensive as well, and once you do get them, they don’t add that much. Geometric Feel the Beats is available for a budget price of only $4.99.
