Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between from Fellow Traveller and Silverstring Media is a freeform narrative journey on Nintendo Switch. It expands on the experimental journey that was what is now known as Glitchhikers: First Drive. It’s a Rated M for Mature experience that will take you through a late-night highway drive, a quiet train car in the early hours, a walk through a charming moonlit park, and the excruciating wait at a deserted airport. It’s an adventure that will, well, take you through literal spaces between each destination. And you should definitely play it using headphones!

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between Review - 1

Due to the game’s nature and the different topics that are presented in the game, the developers added this message after you start the game: “Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between involves finding and interrogating your own wisdom. An important aspect of that is listening to your needs as they arise. Although each conversation was written with those who may be hurt or healing in mind, we encourage you to prioritize your own mental well-being. To that end, you can choose to skip conversations and quit journeys at almost any time, with no repercussions.”

You’ll begin at a quirky convenience store in the middle of the road, where you’ll find some stuff on sale here and there, along with a robotic clerk that will welcome you and ask how it can help you. You’ll be able to move the camera around with the right analog stick and move through the convenience store with the A button before approaching the robot clerk. Once you interact with him, you can ask him where you are, who the robot clerk is, and what is the place in which you’re currently standing.

You’ll learn that the store is known as The Stop, where they provide refreshment, relaxation, and restoration to weary wayfarers. It’s a space located in between spaces. It’s a space located in between thoughts. It’s a space located in between feelings. It’s a space in between journeys. Many travelers end up at The Stop after a physical, mental, or spiritual journey. After your interaction with the robot clerk, you can then go on the highway for a chill drive. There’s also the option of traveling by train for a more collective journey.

On top of all that, the clerk will also mention that a walk through the park would be a good idea if you want to unwind and relax. Unfortunately, the park is currently closed since they’re installing some new sculptures to spruce up the place. Going to the airport would also be a valid option, if not for the next bus to the airport running late… again. This is why you should check if either one is ready for you once you end up back at The Stop at the end of your next journey.

The developers have added some options to make it easier to play the game. There’s a series of filters that you can adjust to affect the overall journey and that you can change as needed during your time with Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between. The filters are for death/grief, suicide/nihilism, abuse, substance use, and body horror. What is irreversible is if you decide to go into the options menu and reset the progress that you have made on the highway, path, railway, and airport terminal stories.

You can also change the text’s size to make it easier to read as you play at home or on the go, enable high contrast for the text, enable or disable subtitles and select their size, change the size of dialogue, enable high contrast for that, and decide if for dialogue choices you need to press and hold a button to select it, or if you will only need a single press for a dialogue option. You can also adjust the field of view, brightness, and contrast, change the reticle’s size, and even decide if you want to show the game’s FPS.

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between Review - 4

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is a freeform narrative journey with a minimalist presentation that will allow you to take on four different experiences. It’s an abstract title that will not be for everyone, but if you give it a chance, it could be one that clicks with you. In the end, when all is said and done, it’s the journey, not the destination. Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is out on Nintendo Switch with a $12.99 asking price.
