RE:CALL is a mind-bending puzzle adventure on Nintendo Switch from Matías Schmied and Whitethorn Games. It’s a game that will really get you thinking. You will be able to dive into the memories of many people as you work on solving a mind-boggling mystery that will affect the present and the future. RE:CALL is a pretty unique experience. Is it worth your time and parting with your hard-earned money? Let’s find out!
The goal of RE:CALL is to solve puzzles within the memories of the characters, which will change the timeline in the present time as well as in the future. You will be exploring the memories of the main character Javier, with memories presented in flashbacks you’ll get to play through. He holds the power to change the recollection of the events for other characters, which affects the timeline of the present day and creates an alternate future. It sounds like a handful, but it all makes sense as soon as you start to play the game.
The game is pretty linear, so you’re unable to experiment a lot to find alternate solutions to each conundrum. There is a lot of trial and error to take on since you have to find the right sequence of actions that will allow you to progress further in the story. Say that, for example, you find two weapons: a gun and a rock. Only one of these weapons will allow you to progress and solve the next puzzle. Choose the wrong one, and you’ll end up at a dead end and will need to give it another go. Not all steps of a sequence will be as simple as that one, and you’ll sometimes need to pay attention to all conversations to find the hints needed for finding the overall solution.
You will need to explore your surroundings as much as you are able to. You will get to do a lot of this in order to find solutions to puzzles, such as a code for a door, or remember from what direction you heard a gunshot – or gunshots! – during another segment. Your brain will get quite a workout! RE:CALL requires you to do a lot of thinking, sometimes outside the box. Paying attention to the slightest detail is pretty important. It all comes together to give us a very fun experience.
I really don’t want to spoil the game too much for you, as it is very story-heavy, and the multiple dialogue choices you need to make along the way really matter. But I can tell you that you will be doing a little bit of everything besides solving puzzles. You will use your weird powers as a means to try and escape from your current situation. You’ll be doing a spot of detective work and solving crimes to reshape the future before it’s too late!
RE:CALL is a very good puzzle adventure on Nintendo Switch. I enjoyed its gameplay loop since making mistakes along the way is very much part of the equation. My only quibbles are the lack of any type of accessibility options, like a color blind mode, which is a shame since paying attention to colors is also something you’ll have to do in this one. Other than that, I can wholeheartedly recommend the game. The gameplay is brilliant. The pixel art is good, and the music does a great job of complementing the action. RE:CALL is out on Nintendo Switch at a $19.99 asking price.
