Wonderland Nights: White Rabbit’s Diary from Ratalaika Games and Sky Bear Games is a schedule/diary-based visual novel. The world of Wonderland has four countries vying for power: the springtime pastures of Hearts, the psychedelic summery Spades, the autumnal deserts of Clubs, and the wintery mountainous Diamonds. Once a year, the royalty of the four nations meet in order to discuss how to govern for the next year, debating and vote on the main topics of war, magic, trade, and borders.
For this particular year, the Hearts nation is the one hosting the summit. Because of this, the titular White Rabbit is given the – dubious – honor of organizing all of the activities… hoping not to make a mistake by pairing up the wrong members of royalty for this or that activity! The White Rabbit works for Hera, the new Queen of Hearts, who is the daughter of the former Queen of Hearts who unfortunately died from a heart attack due to the actions of the pesky Outside. You know the one. Her name is Alice.
There’s a lot of information to consider for this one, which is why you should check out the Codex as needed. From there you will be able to learn mor about each of the 12 members of royalty. Visit each profile to learn about their secrets, reactions to activities, starting stances on each of the four main topics – war, magic, trade, and borders – as well as what they think about each of the other characters. There’s also a history section about what happens on each of the days of the summit as it develops, along with a notes section where new plotlines are added.
The controls are very simple, since the focus is on experiencing all of the dialogue and how you will pair up characters to progress further in the story during the multiple runs that you’ll have to complete to be able to 100% the game and get a new Platinum trophy for your collection – more on that in a bit. The X button will be used to advance dialogue and activate the interface. The L1 button rolls back to earlier dialogue. The R1 button toggles dialogue skipping, which is the best friend of a trophy hunter!
Speaking of which, Wonderland Nights: White Rabbit’s Diary has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you. And since this release is Cross-Buy, if you own a PlayStation 5 console, you can work on getting two Platinum trophies since the PS4 and the PS5 versions of the game have separate lists. There’s a ton of trophies to earn in this one, since each list features 24 Bronze trophies, 16 Silver trophies, and a pair of Gold trophies. You’ll have to play through the game more than once to be able to get all of the different endings, so if you want to speed up the process, you can check out this Wonderland Nights: White Rabbit’s Diary Trophy Guide.
The visual novel genre is already niche, and a game like Wonderland Nights: White Rabbit’s Diary which is a schedule/diary-based visual novel doubles down on the nicheness, so this is certainly not going to be for everyone. The game does features voice acting, but the performances end up feeling all over the place. Wonderland Nights: White Rabbit’s Diary is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $6.99 purchase will give you access to both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, and each one will have its own trophy list for you to work on.
