Sequel Pretty Girls Breakers! PLUS from eastasiasoft and Zoo Corporation is ready for you on PlayStation. It’s a direct follow up to Pretty Girls Breakers!, which I got to review at the start of last year, and follows the same formula, right down to the Rated T for Teen fan service. It’s a brick-busting arcade-style game that can be played in one of two options: Pretty Battle Mode and Eternal Challenge.
Pretty Battle Mode is the main attraction, and it’s where you’ll control a character at the bottom of the screen as it hits back bouncing balls and enemy bullets with a beam saber. By doing this, the aim is to destroy enemies as you try to get rid of all the blocks on the screen. If the ball falls past you or if your character is hit by an enemy bullet, then you’re going to lose a life. If your total lives count goes down all the way to zero, then its’ game over and you will fail that stage. If you run out of time while playing a level, then it’s also game over, and you’ll have to start over as you learn from your mistakes.
For Eternal Challenge Mode, the overall rules remain the same, except that you’re trying to boost your score as high as possible as you take on an endless barrage of bricks to destroy. Your total score will increase at a steady pace as you whack the ball into action and destroy more and more bricks. Your total score will also decrease if the ball goes past you or if your character is damaged. Your game will end when the blocks reach your character’s position at the bottom of the screen.
You’ll be rewarded with points as you defeat enemies and bricks and complete levels. These points can then be used to obtain character costumes and other items at the Dressing Room Exchange. There are 10 girls in total – Beatrix, Ayame, Rui, Asahi, Yu, Erina, Ryoka, Misa, and two more that you’ll have to unlock by playing though the levels of all of the 8 aforementioned girls. You can purchase costumes for 750 points and backdrops for 350 points. By combining these with stickers, you can create some basic dioramas.
Your character can be controlled with the left analog stick or the D-Pad. It can hit the ball back with the beam saber by pressing the X button. If you hit the ball at the right time, you’ll unleash a smash attack, which will, in turn, increase the balls power. This will allow it to deal more damage to enemies and bricks. Perform several smashes in a row, and the ball will grow even mor powerful, thus being able to penetrate bricks.
By destroying bricks, there’s a chance that an item will pop. Grab it with your character to added a special effect that can aid you! These items include the wide flipper, which increases the size and swing range of your character, a double ball that will put an extra ball into play, a barrier that will keep the ball from falling at the bottom of the screen, slow ball that will decrease the speed of all balls in play, and protection, which will protect your character from a single enemy hit.
As was the case for Sequel Pretty Girls Breakers!, sequel Sequel Pretty Girls Breakers! PLUS has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. And since the game is a Cross-Buy title, you’ll get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, and each version has its own trophy list! Each list has 5 Silver trophies and 10 Gold trophies for you to add to your collection before you see that shiny Platinum pop. You’ll have to complete the first three levels for each of the first five girls, and you’ll be set.
If you enjoyed Pretty Girls Breakers! then you’re going to like what Pretty Girls Breakers! PLUS has to offer, since you’ll be getting more of the same. The game offers an arcade-style experience with easy-to-understand gameplay mechanics. There’s even the option of decreasing or increasing the starting speed of the ball before you go into a stage. Pretty Girls Breakers! PLUS is out as a Cross-buy title, so your $6.99 purchase will give you access to both the PS4 and the PS5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
