[PlayStation 5] Rise of Fox Hero Review

Rise of Fox Hero is a colorful, simple, and short top-down 3D platformer on PS5. Learn more in our Rise of Fox Hero review!

Rise of Fox Hero is a colorful, simple, and short top-down 3D platformer on PS5. The game’s difficulty increases at a steady pace as you progress through the game, as you run, jump, and slash your way to the finish line. The graphics are very pretty, bright, and vibrant. This one is from 2Awesome Studio and indie dev Josep Monzonis Hernandez, who previously gave us retro platformer Castle of Pixel Skulls, as well as the 2D action game Horned Knight.

Rise of Fox Hero Review - 1

You play as a fox who jumps and slays enemies across various platforming segments. Some platforming will get trickier as you progress through the game. Not only that, but the game is also part collect-a-thon. Each level has a number of apples to collect, and that number varies for each stage. If you get them all, you earn a red ruby. The same applies to all of the barrels you can hit throughout each level. Get them all, and you will receive a blue crystal. Lastly, each level has a number of gold coins to collect. These are sometimes hidden in nooks and crannies throughout the levels, so you need to spend some time properly searching the levels to make sure you get them all, and the reward is 100% completion!

Rise of Fox Hero Review - 2

There are four chapters with approximately eight levels in each. When you have completed the second to last level, the final level will see you face off against bosses to progress to the last podium, and you will hopefully get the Platinum trophy if you have managed to collect all the apples and hit all the barrels and collected all of the coins. You may have to repeat a level or two for the X number of kills trophies, but that should be about it. The trophy list includes 4 Bronze trophies, 3 Silver trophies, and 10 Gold trophies. There are no difficulty settings and no accessibility settings either, but that wasn’t an issue since the game is pretty easy to play. There are no real game overs either since if you die, you’ll simply respawn at the most recently lit fire.

Rise of Fox Hero Review - 4

Rise of the Fox Hero is out right now on PlayStation 5, and for a fiver, it isn’t a bad deal! The enemies are not in great variety, but they do feel like they’re referencing the beloved Super Mario Bros. series from Nintendo. Why is that? Because you’ll run into spikey hard shells, carnivorous plants – plants that even breathe fire! The colorful presentation also feels very Nintendo.
