Steel Defier from Ratalaika Games and Viridino Studios will have you try to escape from your cell after a malfunction. Your journey will take you through the different rooms in prison as you try to avoid the many traps that will spawn as soon as you press the big button in the center of each room. Once the traps have been activated, you’ll have to collect 15 special keycards to make them stop so that you can open the door and move to the next room.
You’ll control your character with the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you jump around with the X button. The first room will only spawn a single trap type, but as you progress further in the game, more traps will spawn at once. The good news is that you’ll also be able to find some items to aid your escape. Since a single hit is all it takes to defeat you, you’ll always need to be on high alert to avoid all hazards as soon as they show up on the screen!
What items will you collect to improve your odds of survival? They include a robotic arm that will allow you to run at a faster pace with the Circle button, which might be just what you need to avoid an obstacle in the last second. You’ll collect an overcharged magnet that will be extremely useful since it will attract keycards toward you. If you find a resonant watch, you’ll be able to slow down time by pressing the Triangle button. Locate the shield catalyst, and you’ll be able to withstand one extra hit before being defeated.
Trophy-wise, since this one is from Ratalaika Games, there are two things you can expect from it. One is that it includes a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. The other is that we’re getting a Cross-Buy title, so your purchase will give you access to both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, with each one having its own trophy list. The list includes a couple of Silver trophies and 11 Gold trophies. To get them, you’ll have to collect all upgrades, visit 15 different rooms, escape from prison, and play the Survival Mode – which you unlock after completing the game – and survive long enough to grab 50 keycards. If you need some extra help, you can check out this Steel Defier Trophy Guide.
Steel Defier is a bite-sized experience that will have you exploring a maze-like prison in space as you try to earn your freedom. It features simple and to-the-point gameplay mechanics and a challenge that increases at a steady pace. With 40 rooms to explore, as well as a Survival Mode that unlocks after completing the game, you’ll be able to get an hour or so of gaming out of this one, depending on your skill level. Steel Defier is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $4.99 purchase will allow you to download the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game at no extra cost, with each one having its own Platinum trophy for you to work on.
