Marfusha from PLAYISM and hinyari9 is a 2.5D gate defense shooter on Nintendo Switch. You’ll play as the titular character, a gate guard in a dystopian world. Robots are attacking your human settlement, and it’s up to you to keep everyone safe. You’ll be able to play through the Main Mode, as well as take a stab at the more difficult Challenge Mode. As the name suggests, it dials up the difficulty, testing your skills and what you’ve learned. For its Nintendo Switch release, the game gets a brand new animated opening set to the theme song I’ll Be There.

Your hard work is rewarded with some money, but you won’t be able to keep all of it. Why? Because taxes. Opponents will only get stronger as time goes on, and taxes will also increase at a steady pace. If you manage to survive through the night, you’ll get a chance to purchase a card from three available options. There are more than 70 cards to choose from, which include a variety of weapons, upgrades, coworkers, and so on.

Money is extremely tight, so you’ll need to make every coin count. Upgrade and improve Marfusha and her coworkers to keep the cycle going. Add an advanced sniper to help you target enemies or increase your defense so that you can withstand the onslaught. Increase your attack by one level. Equip Marfusha with an assault rifle. Or maybe you’ll need to add an SMG soldier to the cause. You can also spend some money to redraw cards.

The controls for Marfusha are simple and to the point. You’ll control Marfusha with the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you fire your weapon with the ZR button and reload as needed by pressing the Y button. You will need to aim with the right analog stick to properly target enemies as they approach the gate. If the gate suffers more than 50% damage, then repair fees will be deducted from your salary.

Every now and then, Marfusha will be given the option of performing one specific action before going to bed. Just select which one you want to do and press the A button to see what happens! Use the automat to eat a rationed meal, which will increase random stats. Get a rationed drink and boost your magazine capacity. Maybe you’d like to take a shower before going to sleep? This will end up increasing your accuracy and reload speed.

There are extra cards for you to unlock by playing through Challenge Mode. The objectives you’ll need to complete for these extra cards to be made available include playing Challenge Mode, along with surviving for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, and 60 days. Thanks to this, you’ll unlock cards for mines, a mechanical dog, a repair ability, a grenade launcher, an electrothermal cannon, and more.

Marfusha is a fun 2.5D gate defense shooter. It’s easy to pick up and get right into as soon as the first story segment is over. -There’s some trial and error involved as you learn how each enemy unit behaves and how you can take them down with each of the weapons you can buy with your hard-earned money. There are different endings to reach depending on the choices you make along the way. And as a bonus, you will also be able to check out a digital copy of the game’s artbook once you complete the Main Mode. Marfusha is out on Nintendo Switch at an $11.99 asking price.
