Bumballon from Ratalaika Games, 9Ratones, and Angelo Gamedev is a colorful 2D retro-styled journey to save the magical kingdom. Check our Bumballon review!

Bumballon from Ratalaika Games, 9Ratones, and Angelo Gamedev is a colorful 2D retro-styled journey to save the magical kingdom. Your efforts will bring you closer to rescuing the beautiful Princess Moon. You’ll need to time your shots just right to be able to grab as many crystals as possible before reaching the exit. You could also select the mode in which you HAVE to collect all crystals before clearing a stage.

Bumballon Review - 1

The controls are simple. Your fire the titular character from a cannon and will use a series of contraptions to grab the crystals as you change its flying pattern. The cannon is fired by pressing the X button. Once Bumballon is flying, you can press and hold down the X button to inflate him so that he slows down for a bit. This is crucial since you’ll have to time things so that you don’t have the poor bird go splat against a wall – or have it crash into an enemy. To quickly restart a level, just press the Touchpad on the DualSense.

You’ll also run into extra cannon that will hold Bumballon for a bit. Once inside one, you’ll be able to fire it with the Square button. These reminded me a bit of the barrels in Donkey Kong Country since they behave in a similar way. Speaking of Donkey Kong Country, you’ll also rub into some mine cart segments, during which you’ll have to jump in time to avoid obstacles, deadly spikes, or falling down a bottomless pit… all while still trying to collect some crystals. You’ll even have to jump on enemies to clear some of the longer gaps!

Bumballon Review - 3

Trophy-wise, the game has a full list with 11 Gold trophies and a Platinum waiting for you. And since Bumballon is a Cross-Buy title, your purchase will give you both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game. So, if you have a PlayStation 5 console, you could work on adding two new Platinum trophies to your collection. The objectives to complete include finding a secret gem to buy an extra skin, buying an extra skin, finding the spider and bat enemies, jumping into a mine cart for the first time, completing the first world, beating the bosses at the end of the first and second world, complete the third level of the second world, die once, and the die ten times.

Bumballon Review - 4
I was pleasantly surprised by Bumballon. The game’s simple but fun gameplay mechanics, colorful presentation, and bite-sized but fun levels made for a good experience on PlayStation 5. Just press the X button to launch Bumballon, press it again to inflate him, and slow him down to clear some hazards and avoid enemies, and you’ll be on your way toward saving Princess Moon. Bumballon is available as a Cross-Buy release, so your $4.99 purchase will give you both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, with each one having a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you.
