The Companion from RedDeerGames and Studio 46 is a narrative adventure in which you’ll take on the journey as a fox spiritual avatar. It’s a story about love, friendship, and family. You’ll explore the world of The Companion guided by visions of the past, present, and future, as you run through each location. There will also be Artifacts to collect, which unmask Pillars of Light. Find a Pillar of Light and activate it by interacting with it to get a new vision that will play in that area as an energy dome keeps you from moving on until the vision is over.

 

The controls are very simple, since you’ll be controlling your glowing fox spiritual avatar with the left analog stick as you move the camera around as needed with the right one. The ZR button will allow you to jump. You can interact with the R button. As you collect Essences, you’ll gain access to new abilities. The first one will allow you to summon a wisp with the Y button to guide you. Do know that every time you call a wisp, you’ll spend some Essence to summon it.

 

The Companion goes for giving us an atmospheric narrative adventure on Nintendo Switch. As you explore each area with a glowing fox avatar, you’ll collect essence to be able to unlock new visions that will give you some insight into characters and their interactions. It’s a chill experience that, unfortunately, ends up feeling a bit lacking. The game’s graphics have certainly taken a hit when compared to the PC version of the game, with a lower resolution, lots of pop-in, and a framerate that hovers around the 30-40 FPS mark with some sub-30 dips when things get busier. The Companion is out on Nintendo Switch at a $19.99 price.
