Gunman Tales from FobTi and Ratalaika Games gives us an arcade-style shooting gallery game with a Wild West theme. You’ll take on the role of a bounty hunter who is on a mission to try and locate the Legendary Lost Treasure. Unfortunately, you are not the only one who is looking for the Legendary Lost Treasure, so you’ll have to defeat many outlaws that are trying to do the same. It’s a release that has been inspired by games such as Cabal, NAM-1975, and Wild Guns.

The game has three different modes for you to choose from: Adventure, Arcade, and Duel. For Adventure Mode, you’ll move around the map selecting which areas to explore so that you can play through a level. Up to four players can participate as they take turns. Each character will have a different special attack. Every player will have a set number of steps they can take on the map before their turn is over. You can also collect items that will be added to your inventory so that you can use them when needed.

Your character could end up poisoned or drunk. If poisoned, you’ll need to find an antidote before it’s too late! Being drunk will decrease your movement, and controls on the map will be inverted. The good news? You will be immune to poison! You can visit your own house to fix this. You can also end up with the shielded status, which will protect you from another player attacking you, so you won’t have to worry about going into a duel. You need to be careful as you search for the four pieces of the map needed to enter Golden Valley!

There are some mini-games to play during your time with Adventure Mode. You can visit the saloon to play the very popular hi-lo. For this simple game, all you need to do is guess whether the next card has a higher or lower value than the current card. There’s also the possibility of challenging another gunman to battle in a duel by moving your icon on top of theirs. The winner will take all of the loser’s gold or one item. If this would allow the winner to take the last life point from a player, then the winner will receive all of the loser’s gold and items.

The gold coins you collect can be spent at the shop to get things like some dynamite or other guns for your arsenal. You can also use your gold coins to pay the doctor to heal your wounds or to buy health or antidote potions. You can also earn rewards by visiting the sheriff to take on a side job. You could be tasked with protecting the wagon from outlaws, or you could be sent to find a legendary outlaw who is up to no good. Grab a shovel or a pickaxe and try your luck at the old mine.

Arcade Mode removes the aforementioned setup and goes for a pure arcade experience like from back in the day so that you can focus on shooting at everything that moves around the screen – or at the stationary elements that might reward you with some bonus points for your score! As you defeat enemies, you will start to fill up a bar at the upper center of the screen. Once it’s full, you’ll clear the stage and move to the next one so that you can do it all over again. And as the name suggests, Duel Mode will have you go into a duel against an opponent to see who is faster at drawing their gun and shooting.

Once you’re ready to go, you’ll control your bounty hunter with the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you aim with the right one. While doing this, you can shoot at enemies, chickens, ghosts, and so on by pressing the R2 button. You can also roll by pressing the L2 button and left or right left or right on the D-Pad or the left analog stick so that you can avoid incoming attacks. Pressing the Circle button can be pressed to unleash a special attack, such as a set of bombs or a mighty boomerang. The Triangle button will make your character throw a stick of grenade.

Gunman Tales PS5 Review - 3

Shooting at a chicken will make it drop a power-up that can help you or hinder your odds of surviving. You could get an attack power-up that will allow you to fire a volley of very powerful bullets over a short period of time. Grab a hammer, and a barrel will be added to protect you from a set number of shots from your enemies. Collect a pocket watch, and time will slow down for all enemies for a short period. Shoot the chicken to make a chicken curse idol pop, and quickly grab it to turn all enemies into chickens that drop coins that can boost your score.

Since this one is from Ratalaika Games, it’s a Cross-Buy release, so you can play both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one has a Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection. The list includes 11 Gold trophies, and you will need to get most of them by playing in Arcade Mode, with one trophy tied to Adventure Mode. There’s technically one missable trophy for shooting a goldfish twice, but even if you do miss it, giving it another go shouldn’t take long. If you need some tips, you can check this Gunman Tales Trophy Guide.
