Robolt from eastasiasoft and Gamelike Games is a 2D run ‘n’ gun that will take you through 16 levels of fast-paced action. You’ll be playing as a small robot that can fire laser bolts as it runs through each area, jumping to avoid incoming attacks as it destroys everything in its path. You can also jump on top of enemies to deal damage, just like in classic 2D platformers from ages past.
The game offers a minimalist pixel presentation, with your robot being a small square with eyes, arms, and legs. Because of this, all enemies will look as if they are massive entities compared to how your tiny robot looks. This is twice as true for bosses, for which you’ll need to pay attention so that you can figure out their movement and attack patterns to counterattack as you make a dent in their overall health.
You will control your robot with the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you jump with the X button. You can also wall jump by hugging a wall and pressing the X button. The R2 button can be pressed to attack enemies with your mighty laser. There’s also an alternate attack you can use with the L2 button that can certainly pack a punch. Do know that your alternate attack will have limited ammo, so you’ll have to collect power-ups to restock it.
As you move through each of the 16 levels in Robolt, which are split across four different worlds, you’ll also have to collect the many computer chips you can find on your path. These computer chips can be traded for upgrades for your robot so that you can boost your gun, health, and jump. And if you’re having a bit of trouble defeating a boss, then you can replay previous levels to collect more computer chips to purchase additional upgrades.
The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection. And since it’s a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5, you can download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost. And since each game has its own separate trophy list, that means you can try to get two Platinum trophies! Each list is split into 2 Silver trophies and 11 Gold trophies. To get all trophies, you’ll have to defeat 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 enemies, collect 100, 250, 500, and 1,000 computer chips, upgrade your jump, health, and gun at least once, and defeat the first two bosses in the game.
Robolt is a 2D run ‘n’ gun that offers a minimalist experience on PlayStation 5 that unfortunately falls short. There’s not much variety in enemies or level layouts, and the only elements that standout are the bosses you’ll fight at the end of each world. Robolt is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $4.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection.
