Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine from Thunderful, Headup, and Team Meat brings us a puzzle take on the beloved Super Meat Boy universe. That means it’s time to call all fans of highly difficult games and Super Meat Boy fans alike since you’re going to love this new puzzler. It’s a challenging take on the match-three experience, thanks to a heavy dose of Super Meat Boy thrown into the equation. The gameplay mechanics resemble something like Puyo Puyo, except that you’ll need to match at least four pieces of the same color to be able to remove them from play.

Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine Review - 1

You’ll be thrown into the deep end right from the start. Instead of having columns of blobs to clear like in Puyo Puyo, you have imperfect colored Super Meat Boy clones to remove from the playing area as you avoid hazardous traps – such as rotating buzzsaws, chainsaws, TNT, or walls that close in. Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine features 100+ hand-crafted levels, including boss battles. The hazards just get worse as you progress, and that is if you do manage to progress!

The ultimate goal of the game is to form long chain combos, but that goal is severely hampered by the buzzsaws picking off the cubes one by one, so you need to be clever about your cube placements to counter this. The reward for achieving combos is the ability to play as a normal puzzler for a brief moment without the buzzsaws and other hazardous traps moving around, which is a must since they can destroy your puzzle pieces in an instant.

Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine Review - 2

This is one of the hardest… no, scratch that. This is THE hardest puzzle game I’ve ever played. Nothing else in the genre even comes close to this experience. The good news is that there are options you can activate to make it possible to progress further. There’s even an invincibility mode that can help even those who don’t have much experience with puzzle games of this type. This is not mandatory, so it never hurts to have these options, right?

Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine has a Platinum trophy for you, and since it’s a Cross-Buy title, if you have a PS5 console, you’ll get to download the PS4 and PS5 versions of this puzzler. The PS4 and PS5 versions will have separate trophy lists. Each of these lists will have 18 Bronze trophies, 6 Silver trophies, and 6 Gold trophies. You will get trophies for progressing through the game and completing each world, completing combo chains, popping hundreds of clones, retrying a level 10, 50, and 100 times – not as hard to do as you think – or getting an A+ rank on all levels in each world.

Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine PS5 Review - 3

Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is a colorful and very challenging puzzle take on the Super Meat Boy experience. It brings along some of the deadly elements from the series into a puzzle setting which means it’s a game that does require a lot of patience and a lot of practice. I guarantee you will be playing the same level over and over again as you perfect your strategy. If you are a hardcore gamer glutton for punishment, then this game is for you. But even if you’re having a hard time, there’s always the possibility of using the option to make this one not as challenging. Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $9.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, with each one having its own trophy list.
