Nuclear Blaze from Red Art Games and Deepnight Games offers a fast-paced 2D action game that places you in the role of a firefighter air-dropped into a burning facility. With a huge fire burning strong and no other way of controlling it, you must use your experience to contain the fire, investigate what is causing it, and try to save as many survivors as possible before it’s too late. Ready for the twist? There’s a mysterious military facility there! What does Site 16 hold? Will you be able to make it out alive?

Nuclear Blaze Review - 1

You can play the game in its standard mode with a challenging journey up ahead as you run and jump through each area using your water hose to subdue the smaller fires on your path, but there’s also an option for the younger gamers in your life. Kid Mode will have its own set of levels with easier layouts, an immortal firefighter, and simplified controls with auto-aim. The game has been updated to the Hold My Beer Edition, which means that once you beat the game, you can play in Hold My Beer Mode, for which there are more hidden areas, along with new threats to overcome.

You’ll control your firefighter with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the X button and using your water hose with the Square or R2 buttons… if you still have enough water in your tank! You can use items with the Triangle button or by pressing down on the D-Pad or the left analog stick. The Circle button will eventually allow you to use a dodge to avoid damage. There’s the option of watering while aiming up by pressing the R1 button or aiming down by using the L1 button while using the water hose. Once you obtain the water shield, you can press down on the left analog stick or the D-Pad when using the water hose to protect yourself.

You can tailor your experience by using the difficulty options available in the settings menu. You’ll see a difficulty bar that will increase or decrease depending on the things you decide to change or activate. You can add some armor for your firefighter so that it can take a hit for each armor level, and you can even add unlimited armor. There’s also the possibility of increasing your water level and the water range and efficiency of your water hose. The last thing you can change is the speed at which fire spreads.

The game features a full trophy list with a Platinum at the end of the road. The list includes 5 Bronze trophies, 7 Silver trophies, and 8 Gold trophies. There are trophies that will pop as you progress through the game, but there are some of them that you’ll have to work on. Locate a secret area, rescue all the hidden cats in the game, and then give it another go in Hold My Beer Mode. Since the game can be completed in an hour and change – all depending on your skill level – this is going to be a short but fun trophy run… as long as you don’t miss a cat along the way!

Nuclear Blaze offers a fast-paced 2D action game in which you’ll need to take on the role of a firefighter that is ready to save the day. It offers a bite-sized game that can be enjoyed by gamers of all skill levels. Between the standard journey, the one younger gamers can take on with Kids Mode, or by dialing up the challenge in Hold My Beer Mode, there’s something in here for everyone. It’s a game that you can complete in around an hour and change at most, with an experience that is all killer and no filler. Nuclear Blaze is out on PlayStation 4 with a $14.99 price tag.
