Hello everybody! I have a different kind of review for you today: a visual novel in the vein of STEINS;GATE. In fact, this one is part of the Science Adventure series! If you like games that are fully story-orientated with some interactivity here and there, then look no further than ANONYMOUS;CODE from Spike Chunsoft and Mages. ANONYMOUS;CODE is kind of like an interactive book experience in which you’ll be following a character that goes through some interesting twists and turns as the story unfolds.

Due to the game’s main premise and genre, talking too much about the story could end up spoiling your time with the game, so I’ll try to keep this ANONYMOUS;CODE review as spoiler-free as possible. Do know that if you enjoy visual novels like STEINS;GATE and CHAOS;CHILD, then you’re in for a treat. This visual novel follows Pollon Takaoka, a young individual working alongside Cross Yumikawa, as part of the Nakano Symphonies, on hacking-related jobs to earn some money and to help others who are in need of their services.

Pollon, who is a young single guy, claims one day he is going to elope. At this point, a mysterious girl known as Momo Aizaki appears, which is a bit strange hearing that name after the Facebook frenzy over a phantom preying on teenagers a few years ago – some say they saw this Momo and others didn’t, so a mystery within a mystery that truth will never be known. Anyway. Momo appears, and Pollan receives an app called Save and Load, which allows him to save data and reload much like you can in a video game.

There is also a genius hacker who goes by the name of Cicada 3301 and organizes quests that are apparently impossible to solve. Are they really? Another reason to dive into the game and find out for yourself! So, in a nutshell, you have three important things to know about this riveting visual novel. Oh, and there’s a great number of branches of reality, and you must do whatever it takes to save the world.

Gameplaywise, you will advise Pollan on when it is the right time to Save and when to Load. If you take anything from this ANONYMOUS;CODE review, it is that your choices do matter. The choices you make along the way will have an impact on how the story unravels and how other characters see, as well as, you know, how things will end for our unlikely hero. If you want to see everything that ANONYMOUS;CODE has to offer, then you won’t be able to see it all during a single run. How will your journey with Pollan unravel?

I found the story to be quite engaging at times, but you do need to know there will be sections during which it will be ore of a slow burn. But the good news is that it did manage to keep me engaged and continuing further and further into its wormhole, which is not something that all visual novels do well. An example of a series that does a great job of keeping you going until the end is Danganronpa

If you have played other games in the Science Adventure series, then you know what to expect from ANONYMOUS;CODE. We’re getting a very polished art style, excellent voice acting, and a story that will keep you coming back for more. As you follow Pollon Takaoka and use the Save and Load app, you’ll be able to make choices that will have an impact on the faith of the world. If you’re a fan of visual novels, then ANONYMOUS;CODE is an easy one to recommend. ANONYMOUS;CODE is out on September 8 on PlayStation 4 with a $59.99 price tag. There’s also the ANONYMOUS;CODE Digital Deluxe Edition for $79.99, which includes the game, an Interactive Digital Art Book, and the Sound Data Log with the game’s full soundtrack.

This ANONYMOUS;CODE review is based on a PlayStation 4 copy provided by Spike Chunsoft.
