Action RPG bullet hell Touhou: New World from XSEED Games will test your skills as you take a trip back to Gensokyo to once again save the day. Check out our Touhou: New World review!

Action RPG bullet hell Touhou: New World from XSEED Games will test your skills as you take a trip back to Gensokyo to once again save the day. This game takes elements from the main Touhou series while spinning things into a different genre from the main bullet entries in the series. It was all peace and quiet in Gensokyo until, one day, things took a turn for the worse. Unfortunately, all of the Youkai and animals have suddenly gone berserk!

For this one, you’ll be taking on the role of one of two characters: Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. Reimu Hakurei is a shrine maiden who has high spirit energy and is a skilled martial artist. Her one goal is thwarting all evil Youkai from Gensokyo… with some exceptions. Marisa Kirisame is a human sorceress who lives in the Forest of Magic and is dedicated to her research. You’ll be joined by Sumikero Usami, a human witch from the Outside World who manages to use a mysterious sphere to transport the two of you back to Gensokyo.

You’ll control your character with the left analog stick. Pressing the Square button in quick succession will allow you to perform combos. If you press and hold down the Square button, your character will dash at a fast pace. You can jump with the X button. Special skills will be mapped to the Circle, Triangle, and R1 buttons. You’ll also have a spell set to the L1 button, which is very powerful but takes a while to charge up again, so you’ll need to keep its cooldown in mind.

Touhou: New World Review - 1

You can guard attacks by pressing the R2 button. If you time this just right as an enemy’s attack is about to land, you’ll get to execute a Perfect Guard. You’ll be given a heads-up thanks to the blue glow that will surround an enemy. Landing a Perfect Guard will briefly slow down your enemy, thus leaving them open for a counterattack for a short period. Do be careful with barrages since you won’t be able to block them. Just jump out of the way before they hit you!

You’ll need to keep an eye out on each character’s stats as you get to level them up. Each character will have a life value – a.k.a. their HP – as well as values for attack, critical rate percentage, critical damage percentage, item drop rate, skill regen rate, and Perfect Guard length. You can also equip them with weapons, accessories, and armor to provide an additional boost to the value for this or that stat. Oh, and pressing the L2 button will deplete your vigor while allowing you to recover 1/4 of your health.

Touhou: New World Review - 2

A new General Store will open up once you’ve progressed far enough in the game. It’s managed by Nitori, who has many useful items you can use during your adventure! You could get a new weapon, accessory, or armor for your character, or you might want to sell those that you don’t need anymore so that you can get some extra gold. You could also go and buy a mystery capsule for 1,000 gold.

As the name suggests, you won’t know what item resides inside the capsule you’re about to buy until you open it! You could end up losing a lot of money and get some normal clothes, or you could find a Courtesy Attire to boost your HP and critical damage. Who knows what you’ll get from the capsule? As you progress further in the game’s story, more facilities will open up, so be sure to check back!

As you play Touhou: New World, you’ll notice some red icons dotted around each area. Red icons denote story quests that must be completed to move the story forward. Along with story quests, there will also be sidequests for you to consider, which are presented on the map as green icons. While completing sidequests is not mandatory, completing them will reward you with some additional gold, experience points, and maybe even rare items.

Trophy-wise, this one has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you. And since this one is a Cross-Buy title, your purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost… and each version will have its own separate trophy list! Each list is split into 10 Bronze trophies, 9 Silver trophies, and 5 Gold trophies for you to work on. Since there are separate stories for Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame, that means there will be trophies for you to collect by completing each of their stories, alongside miscellaneous trophies for leveling up characters, their abilities, and spells.

Touhou: New World Review - 3

Touhou: New World is a spin-off in the series that pays homage to its roots by giving us an action RPG bullet hell. It’s your task to rid Gensokyo of the Youkai entities that have gone rogue, all while someone from the Outside World manages to make the jump into Gensokyo. Is something else happening behind the scenes? Touhou: New World Review is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $29.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.

This Touhou: New World review is based on a PlayStation 5 copy provided by XSEED Games.
