Shuyan Saga fom Lofty Sky Entertainment and ESDigital Games brings us a visual novel adventure mixed with some martial arts combat. The game was originally released on Steam back in 2017, and it’s now made its way to the PlayStation 4. You’ll be taking on the role of the titular Shuyan, a young Princess who is determined to become a true kung fu warrior, as she embarks on a journey to protect the Five Kingdoms from the Guer Army, which is set on invading.

Shuyan Saga Review - 1

The game’s story is presented by way of fully voice acted hand-drawn static scenes, with the whole thing featuring over 1,400 illustrated panels showcasing the art of Chinese comic book master Daxiong, who has previously worked on Star Wars at Dark Horse, as well as Justice League for DC Comics. The game’s art style certainly helps everything pop, and the English voice acting brings to life the different characters you’ll meet.

Combat will sometimes be handled from a top-down view, while other times you’ll need to battle it out from a side view. When playing from a top-down view, you’ll control your character with the left analog stick as you move through each area, attacking with the Square button and dodging with the X button. You can parry an incoming attack by using the right analog stick as you time things just right. There’s also the option of blocking by pressing the R1 button.

Things change a bit when you’re in combat and have to take on opponents from a side view. When fighting from a side view, you’ll use the R1 and L1 buttons to block up and down as needed. As you’ve probably guessed by now, that means you’ll also have to attack your enemy high and low, which is done by pressing the Square and Triangle buttons, respectively. You can quickly dodge an attack by pressing left on the D-Pad and can counter by pressing right on the D-Pad as long as you do this at the right time.

There are different combos – which the game calls moves – that you can use to your advantage during combat. Along with the basic light punches and kicks, you can also string together punches and kicks to weaken your opponent. There’s the Thunder Palm, which is executed by pressing Square, Square, Triangle, Triangle, Square. You could also use the Mountain Leap, a powerful jump kick executed by pressing Triangle, Triangle, Square, Square, Square.

For both views, you’ll be able to activate a special power by pressing the R2 button or activate your magic by using the L2 button. Gain enough energy, and you can press the R2 button for a Qi Stun that will stun your opponent, thus allowing you to unleash a combo that can change the tide of battle. Progress through the second episode, and you’ll eventually get to learn how to harness the power of the phoenix.

As you progress through the story and gain experience points, Shuyan will get to level up. As she levels up, she’ll be rewarded with upgrades that will help her take on the increasingly stronger and trickier opponents that the game will send to try and capture her. She will be able to lower damage received when blocking, make enemies remain stunned for longer when hit with a Qi Stun, to name some examples.

Trophy-wise, Shuyan Saga features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy as your reward. The list is split into 5 Bronze trophies, 7 Silver trophies, and 8 Gold trophies. There are trophies that will pop as you complete each of the story episodes in the game, with some trophies tied to some specific choices that you make along the way. The rest of the trophies are tied to the Jade’s Temple Adventure and Tournament modes, which will unlock as you progress further in the game.

Shuyan Saga Review - 4

Shuyan Saga brings us a visual novel adventure mixed with some martial arts combat. As you take on the role of the titular character, you’ll be honing your kung fu skills to try and defeat the evil Guer Army, which is aiming to conquer the Five Kingdoms. It leans heavily into the visual novel part of the equation, with over 1,400 hand-drawn images and voice acting to bring everything to life. Shuyan Saga is out on PlayStation 4 with a $14.99 price tag.

This Shuyan Saga review is based on a PlayStation 4 copy provided by ESDigital Games.
