Low Story from Dolores Entertainment and Engin Ba?türk is a 2.5D action platformer on PlayStation 5. Learn more about it in our Low Story review!

Low Story from Dolores Entertainment and Engin Ba?türk is a 2.5D action platformer on PlayStation 5. You’ll be playing as the titular character, who will definitely remind you of Sackboy as you watch the first cutscene in the game. After being literally dropped out the window of a building, he’s cursed by the Red One and must seek revenge against all that has wronged him. He dons a hat, puts on a bandana over his face, and starts running to the right, away from the aforementioned building. You can play in four different difficulty settings, with the last one being locked until you complete the game.

You’ll control Low with the left analog stick, jumping and double jumping with the X button. Once you grab a gun during the first stage of the game, you’ll be able to shoot by pressing the R2 button. Just be sure to aim with the right analog stick so that you can make every shot count! You can roll by pressing the L2 button to avoid incoming attacks. Once you have more than one weapon, you’ll be able to switch between them by pressing the R1 button. When you unlock the Bullet Rain ability, you’ll be able to press and hold down the L1 button to activate it.

As you defeat enemies, you’ll get to collect Dark Stones. These can be used to trade at the shop to purchase an orb of health to heal your wounds, extra weapons like the Uzi or the bazooka, or upgrades to boost your character. You can increase Low’s skills so that, for example, Bullet Rain burns any enemy it hits or make it so that your Heal Ward attacks enemies with chain lighting. You can also get upgrade points, which you can spend at Low’s skill tree.

By pressing up, you’ll open Low’s skill tree, where you can use skill points to increase the damage he deals with his guns, how much health he has, the damage dealt by his Bullet Rain skill, as well as lower its overall cooldown period. By getting your damage to level 3, you’ll also gain a stability bonus for each branch. For damage, you’ll get a 30% chance to spawn seeking bullets. For health, you will get the Healing Ward ability. For Bullet Rain, you’ll obtain an improved canon and boost the ability’s speed.

Low Story on PlayStation 5 has a full trophy list for you to work on. The list includes a single Silver trophy and 11 Gold trophies for you to unlock. The first trophy to pop will be for getting your gun a couple of minutes after starting the game. After this, there are trophies for defeating each of the bosses in the game, locating the tool that will allow you to fix some broken electronics on your path, defeating a special boss at a challenge stone, opening a sealed door, and purchasing a companion at the shop – which is not going to be cheap.

The game has several bugs that will hinder your progress. While visiting the optional cave available as a quest from the shopkeeper, odds are you’ll be clipping through walls and floors to your doom… or not. You’ll be forced to close the game and open it up again since you won’t be able to select “Go Back” from the pause menu. Why? Because the game will soft lock and you won’t be able to open the pause menu. This happens more often when you use your dash.

Low Story is a 2.5D action platformer on PlayStation 5 in which you’ll take control of the titular character. After being dropped from a window, landing on the street, and then being cursed by the Red One, he goes out on a quest for revenge. You’ll collect additional weapons with limited ammo, unlock extra abilities, collect Dark Ore to trade for items and boosts, and upgrade your character’s damage, health, and special ability by using the skill points you obtain along the way. While it offers a serviceable 2.5 action platforming experience, there are some bugs that will get in the way. Your character also does not have any invincibility window after being hit, so if you miss a jump and land between more than two enemies, you’ll be dead in a couple of seconds. Low Story is out on PlayStation 5 with a $7.99 asking price. There’s also a PlayStation 4 version available for the same price as a separate purchase.
