Forest Grove from Blowfish Studios and Miga Games is a first-person mystery game on PlayStation 5. You’ll be taking on the role of a remote forensics investigator tasked with finding a teenager who has gone missing. Her name is Zooey Kunstmatigaard, daughter of the late Max Kunstmatigaard, which makes her the heiress to a billion-dollar tech fortune. She has been reported as missing by her stepmother, Mary. Zooey was last seen in her bedroom on Forest Grove. She left her there after they had returned from the hospital, where Zooey had been treated for a mental health episode.

Forest Grove Review - 1

Because of the nature of this particular case, the Remote Forensics Bureau – the RFB – decided it was time to roll out a new piece of technology: the Nanodeck, which was developed by Max Kunstmatigaard. This is the tool that you will be using to investigate this missing person case as you research the scene, look for evidence, and try to find out the truth about the young Zooey Kunstmatigaard going MIA. That means you’ll be searching for DNA, fingerprints, items, and more as you try to find new leads that can bring you closer to finding out what has really happened.

With this one being played from a first-person perspective, you’ll be controlling your character with the left analog stick as you look around you with the right one. If you press in on the left analog stick, you’ll be able to walk at a faster pace. The X button will be for interacting. You have a flashlight with you, which you can turn on and off by pressing the Square button. Pressing the Triangle button will place a light bar to illuminate the area. Since you’ll be searching for clues and evidence to point you in the right direction, when you interact with some objects, you’ll be able to zoom in and out as needed by using the L2 and R2 buttons in order for you to get a closer look.

Forest Grove Review - 2

The nanodeck allows you to reconstruct a snapshot of a scene in the real world so that you can investigate it in detail, which will include biotraces. A biotrace is a representation of a person and sound in nano form. By using the hovercam, you’ll be able to recreate conversations between individuals based on their biotrace. But first, you’ll have to inspect items as you search for things you can add to your case file, as well as DNA and perspiration metabolites.

You’ll notice that some objects are brought up into a closer zoomed-in view. This is your cue for slowly moving them around so that you can find the spots you can interact with. Rotate an item until you’ve found all of the information it can provide for your case. Once you’ve collected all evidence from it, said item will show up on your physical evidence board. Digital evidence you collect, such as photos and documents, will be added to your digital evidence board. The game will have you go through a short orientation tutorial so that you can get the hang of things before you start to deal with the real thing.

Forest Grove Review - 3

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you. And since it’s also a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5 console, you can download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, and each one will have its own trophy list for you to work on. Each list has 2 Silver trophies and 10 Gold trophies. The first trophy to pop will be the one you get for gaining access to the nanodeck after completing the orientation room. After that, you’ll have to locate some secret areas within the house, find all audio fragments around the house, recreate all conversations, locate every piece of digital and physical evidence, and solve the case. If you need some extra help, here’s a Forest Grove Trophy Guide for you to check.

Forest Grove is a first-person mystery game on PlayStation 5 in which you’ll be tasked with investigating a missing person case. As a remote forensics investigator, you must search for physical and digital evidence that can lead you to find Zooey Kunstmatigaard, daughter of the late Max Kunstmatigaard and the heiress to a billion-dollar tech fortune. It’s a walking sim mystery experience, and that means it’s not going to be for everyone. I also want to mention I ran into a couple of bugs during my time with the game.

Forest Grove Review - 4

At one point, after placing a light bar, I wasn’t able to interact with anything and had to restart the game. At another time, I checked all clues on a physical item and it wasn’t added to my physical evidence, so I had to restart the game. Forest Grove is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $19.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game at no extra cost, with each one having its own trophy list.

This Forest Grove review is based on a PlayStation 5 copy provided by Blowfish Studios.
