Calico from Whitethorn Games and Peachy Keen Games is a colorful and cozy in which you’ll be running a cat café as you explore Heart Village and meet new friends. After selecting your name, you’ll be able to customize your character’s look. First up will be selecting your character’s skin color. Once you’ve done that, you’ll select the size for your character’s shoulders, chest, waist, bottom, and fluff. Next up will be selecting your eyes and eye color, as well as the eyebrows and lashes. You can also select nose bridge and with, as well as mouth shape and size, along with chin size. And then there’s the makeup you can apply between eyeliner, blush, and lipstick.

You can also select up to three accessories, add some glasses, and maybe some facial hair. Oh, and you can also pick your hairstyle and the clothes your character will wear. There’s a solid variety of hats, ears, tops, bottoms, socks, and shoes to choose from… once you manage to unlock them while playing through Calico. The more you play and the more tasks you complete, the more customization options will become available for you.

You’ll control your character with the left analog stick as you move the camera around with the right one. Jumping will be done with the X button, and you can grab stuff by pressing the Square button. The D-Pad can be used to check on animals, quests, your character, and the map. When viewing the map, you can zoom in and out with the L2 and R2 buttons as needed.

Calico Review - 2

Once you get started and arrive at Heart Village, you’ll be greeted by Kiva, who is the town’s mayor! The café used to be run by your aunt, and it’s now up to you to carry on and fix the café since it’s certainly seen better days. To get the café up and running, you’ll need to add some furniture, bring an animal or two to the café – look for at least a couple of cats for your cat café! – and even get some cooking done.

The furniture part is not going to be an issue since Mayor Kiva will kindly provide you with some tables, chairs, and a couch or two. She’ll even be kind enough to ask what theme you’d like to have for said furniture. Finding an animal or two won’t be an issue since they’re running around all over the place. And then, there’s cooking. By interacting with the floating book in the kitchen, you’ll be turned into a tiny version of yourself.

Calico Review - 3

Once you’re tiny, you’ll need to move around the kitchen to grab the ingredients needed for the recipe. You can jump on what is now a giant spoon to send your character flying through the air to travel great distances in a single leap. Some ingredients you’ll have to throw into the cooking pot, while others you’ll need to sprinkle on top of the pot over and over again until you’ve filled up the gauge. If you’re missing some ingredients, just pay attention to the markers that will point you in the right direction. Oh, and there’s a tiny elevator you can take to one of the higher shelves!

The other areas you’ll be able to explore during your time with Calico are Witching Woods, Snowbell Mountains, Cutie City, Golden Grove, and Clover Coast. You’ll have to unlock the paths to each of these locations since they’ll be blocked at the start of your new life in Heart Village. By helping others and completing the different objectives they present to you, you’ll be able to build lasting bonds with your new neighbors.

And now, let’s talk about the trophies! Calico has a full trophy list for you to work on. And since this is a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5, you’ll be able to download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost. The list of trophies is split into 2 Silver trophies and 11 Gold trophies. What are the objectives to complete? You’ll have to get your new café ready for customers, clear the paths to each of the areas in the game, ride on a giant animal, meet all the townsfolk, meet every type of animal, meet every animal, fill up your café’s menu, complete all tasks requested by the townsfolk, and take to the skies and fly on an animal.

Calico Review - 4

Calico is a colorful and cozy in which you’ll be running a cat café as you explore Heart Village and unlock the paths that can take you to its surrounding areas. As you meet new friends, you’ll create bonds with them as you help sort out their issues by completing the tasks they provide you with. This is a chill journey that should take you around 5-6 hours to complete all objectives and get a new Platinum trophy – or two – for your collection. Calico is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $11.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
