Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan from CollectorVision will place you in the role of the expert adventurer on a new quest. It’s a game that pays homage to the old-school classics from the Nintendo Entertainment System era – you know, the NES. You find yourself trapped in a huge Mayan pyramid and must now find a way to escape before it’s too late! Since the Feathered Serpent Kukulkan has broken up the sacred Haab calendar into seven pieces and hidden them within the pyramid, it’s up to Sydney to find them to bring back peace and balance to the Maya civilization.

The game is part of the Sydney Hunter series of games, a modern retro franchise that pays homage to many ages of gaming past, with games Sydney Hunter and the Shrines of Peril, Sydney Hunter and the Sacred Tribe, and Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death. That last one got a Kickstarter campaign to cover the manufacturing costs for physical NES, SNES, and Super Famicom versions. Thanks to the support of more than 400 backers, the crowdfunding campaign reached a goal of over $39,000. After a 2019 Nintendo Switch digital release – and a physical version from First Press Games – it’s now making its way to PlayStation 4.

You’ll control Sydney with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the X button and attacking with the Square or Circle buttons as you crack your whip. The first additional item you’ll collect is a blue shell. The Shell of Wisdom allows its holder to understand foreign tongues. You’ll soon gain access to additional weapons that you can use during your adventure, such as a mighty spear that will allow you to attack enemies underwater, or to attack other enemies from a safer distance. You can quickly switch between weapons by using the L1 and R1 buttons. Pressing the L2 and R2 buttons will allow you to switch between items in your inventory.

A very important treasure you’ll need to search for in each section of the pyramid is a crystal skull. There are many of them to find, and they’re needed for gaining access to more areas. Think of them as, say, the stars that you can collect on Super Mario 64 in order to open additional doors in Princess Peach’s castle. To get to most of these crystal skulls, you’ll have to search high and low and destroy many blocks to obtain the colored keys needed for opening the corresponding colored doors.

During his adventure, you’ll be collecting a ton of gems as you defeat enemies, destroy blocks, and break open ancient jars. These gems can be used to purchase useful items to aid you on your adventure. What can you get with your hard-earned gems? You might want to purchase an elixir to heal your wounds after making too many mistakes. Just be sure to pay attention to their color! You can also buy a Maya Meal, which will increase your overall health with an extra heart, which can certainly make a big difference.

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you, and it will be a challenging quest to take on! The list is split into 9 Bronze trophies, 15 Silver trophies, and 6 Gold trophies. What will you need to do to add that new Platinum trophy to your collection? You’ll have to defeat a snake, destroy a ghost, purchase your first Maya Meal, defeat 25 bats in any level, use the save statue for the first time, collect the spear, collect all crystal skulls, gran all yellow diamonds, and beat each of the bosses in the game, to name some examples.

Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan will place you in the role of the expert adventurer on a new quest. After finding yourself in a huge Mayan pyramid, you’ll need to not only find a way to escape but also locate the seven pieces of the sacred Haab calendar that the evil Kukulkan has stolen. You’ll need to do this before chaos falls upon the Maya civilization! Do you have what it takes to avoid the many hazards on your path so that you can defeat the different deities, collect all relics, and live to tell the day? Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan is out on PlayStation 4 with a $9.99 price tag.
