Passing By – A Tailwind Journey from Dear Villagers, Alex Rose Games, and Studio Windsocke is a cozy survival adventure game in which you take to the sky. Your journey as Curly will begin at home on a floating island while looking at clouds to try and see what they remind you of. Suddenly, an airship powered by a hot air balloon ended up dropping anchor as it was running low on fuel.

Cato, who was piloting the titular airship, then introduces himself. He’s a veteran aeronaut and senior post officer who feels that his best years are now far behind him. He still has a very special letter to deliver, but since he barely managed to land before crashing the Tailwind, he asks for Curly’s help to deliver this letter to an unknown recipient. After handing you his old uniform and mailbag, you’ll be on your way to an adventure you certainly were not expecting!

Your first task will be to fix the Tailwind. You’ll need a large metal bottle with a turquoise coating since those are filled up with gas to power the airship. You’ll move around with the left analog stick and jump with the A button. Grab objects with the Y button so that you can push or pull them as needed. This could allow you to, say, pull a box so that you can use it to reach a platform that would otherwise be too high. This button will also be used to collect items.

The items you obtain in this adventure will be added to your inventory, which you can check by pressing the X button. You can switch between tabs in your inventory by using the L and R buttons. Along with finding the gas canister to power the Tailwind, you’ll also need to have to collect some fresh water and some food. If you’re going on an adventure, you need to stay in as good of a shape as possible!

You’ll probably need to go through a long training course before you’re able to pilot the Tailwind just to make sure you’re qualified, right? Actually, it seems all you need to do is check out the guide Cato provided to you and give it a good read! It’s thanks to this guide that you’ll learn that you have to increase the heat to make the Tailwind climb in the air and that lowering the temperature will make it sink. Just be careful not to overload the ship with too many things, or else you’ll burn gas more quickly!

Using the sail, you can give the Tailwind a horizontal speed boost. The sail has three different settings for you to consider: no speed, half speed, and full speed. Do know that since the wind will constantly be blowing, the ship will always move, even if the sail is set to no speed. As you fly through the air, remember that you’ll have to visit your bunk below the deck to save the game by relaxing in the hammock.

The Tailwind can be upgraded thanks to the balloon attachments you can install on the ship. These include, for example, the telescope, which you can use to scout out faraway islands. While using the telescope, time will slow down so that you can give each island a closer look. Once you find an island to land on, you can activate the anchor with the lever to enter anchoring mode. Select an island, and the Tailwind will automatically make its way to it.

Passing By - A Tailwind Journey Review - 3

What will you do between flying away from home and eventually – hopefully – delivering such an important letter? Well, talking about everything you can run into would end up spoiling the experience. But let’s talk a bit about the peculiar monastery you’ll run into. This particular monastery worships a giant magpie, and they live their lives based on when the monastery’s bell rings. This signals when they have to, say, eat their lunch. But the bell won’t ring because the magpie they worship stole the clapper! Or borrowed it. They don’t like the word stole.

Your task will be to explore the entire monastery so that you can find a way to reach the tower bell – without hurting yourself in the process – while also locating something shiny you can use to trick the magpie into leaving its nest. That way, you can rush to its nest to grab the clapper, ring the bell, and make it possible for everyone at the monastery to finally enjoy their lunch… which has been cooking for far too long!
