Dead End City from eastasiasoft and Pixel Licker is a fast-paced vertical shoot ‘em up set in a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic world. Check our Dead End City review!

Dead End City from eastasiasoft and Pixel Licker is a fast-paced vertical shoot ‘em up set in a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic world. You’ll be taking on the evil Scorpio gang that is up to no good. As you ride in your car – known as a Chariot in this universe – you’ll ride on your own through the wastelands as you make the most of your arsenal and your skills. Did I mention that your loved ones have been abducted by the Scorpio gang?

Dead End City Review - 1

There will be a handful of vehicle and driver combos to choose from… once you unlock them. At first, only Ripper will be available. Since you’ll be driving through the wasteland, your vehicle will be constantly burning up fuel, which is why you’ll have to collect fuel canisters to replenish the bar at the bottom of the screen. This is also your health bar, so if you’re hit, you’ll lose a considerable amount of fuel!

There are three different options for playing Dead End City: Arcade Mode, Score Attack Mode, and Highway Mode. Arcade Mode is the main experience in which you’ll be taking on five different stages as you try to make it to the end while beating thousands of enemies and defeating the bosses for each level… all with a single credit! This does mean you’ll need to really pay attention to what each level throws at you. You’ll also have to learn the movement and attack patterns of each boss.

Dead End City Review - 2

As expected, Score Attack Mode will task you with getting the best score possible before time runs out. To play a level in Score Attack Mode you’ll first have to beat it in Arcade Mode. You can also unlock it at the shop – more on that in a bit. As for Highway Mode, you’ll have two minutes to score as many points as possible. Using your special shot will consume fuel instead of ammo. When you destroy enemies, bonus balloons will pop up. Rival cars will also appear every now and then. Defeat them for some extra points!

You’ll drive your car with the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you try to avoid enemies and their attacks. You will shoot at them with the X button and will be able to use your vehicle’s special shot by pressing the Circle button. As you destroy enemies, your score multiplier will increase. Once it hits the x9 max, the enemies you destroy will start to leave behind gold medals.

Dead End City Review - 3

The many, many gold medals you’ll collect can be used at the in-game shop under the Extras menu to unlock additional stuff for the game. Some of these can also be unlocked by playing through the game and completing specific objectives. You can buy the Hard difficulty setting, four additional vehicles to control, toggle the boss health bar visibility, toggle the player hitbox visibility, unlock the sound test, unlock areas for the Score Attack Mode, unlock gallery packs, or alternate body styles for vehicles.

Trophy-wise, this one has a full list waiting for you. And since it’s a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5 console you can download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have it’s own trophy list. Each list is split into 2 Silver trophies and 10 Gold trophies for you to work on. You’ll have to beat a boss without taking damage, clear each of the five stages in Arcade Mode, clear Arcade Mode in the normal difficulty setting, defeat 1,000 enemies, defeat 5,000 enemies, collect 100 good medals, collect 1,000 good medals, and score 1,000,000 points in Arcade Mode. If you need some extra help, you can check out this Dead End City Trophy Guide.

Dead End City Review - 4

Dead End City is a fast-paced vertical shoot ‘em up set in a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic world. You’ll have to take on the evil Scorpio gang with your Chariot as you collect enough ammo and fuel to keep it going until the end. You must give it your all so that you can save your loved ones who have been abducted by the Scorpio gang before it’s too late! Dead End City is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $14.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game at no extra cost, and each one will have its own trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for ypu.

This Dead End City review is based on a PlayStation 5 copy provided by eastasiasoft.
