[PlayStation 5] Xatrom Command Review

[PlayStation 5] Xatrom Command Review

Xatrom Command from Ratalaika Games and 9Ratones is an arcade shooter game in which you’ll have to rid a lab of an alien invasion. Check our Xatrom Command review!

Time to clean things up! Grab your weapon, recruit a friend, and start blasting wave after wave of alien scum into oblivion. Obtain more powerful weapons, battle against enemies of all sizes, clear each room, and eliminate the thread to the facility.

In Xatrom Command from Ratalaika Games and 9Ratones, you’ll be up against extraterrestrial foes that were born from a scientific experiment gone wrong. In this game, you’re offered to play alone or in local multiplayer and have three difficulty settings to choose from: Easy, Normal, or Hard.

The level design is simplistic, as each room consists of a single screen and requires you to eliminate all enemies and destroy crates to progress. While it is standard to have the enemies destroyed before moving to the next screen, I thought it was an unnecessary and tedious chore to have to destroy all crates before being able to move on to the next screen.

As far as the gameplay mechanics go, you’ll move your character with the left analog stick, and aiming is done with the right analog stick. Instead of the standard 360 degrees of aiming that is usually available, this game opted to offer only 8 axes of aiming which felt restrictive, especially compared to other twin-stick shooters on PlayStation 5.

Moreover, the enemy variety is lacking as you’ll always be presented with the same uninspired enemies. By the time you’ve reached the Platinum trophy 26 levels into the game, you’ll have fought three different sizes of the same spider model, two different sizes of the same worm model, and some bosses. And that’s it.

In the audio department, the background music is a repetitive loop. On top of that, there are some accessibility issues with poorly designed green menus, on which green buttons containing another shade of green text will prove to be quite a challenge to navigate through, even for people without color blindness.

On the trophies side, and with this one being a Ratalaika Games release, you can expect to earn two quick Platinum trophies for your collection since the game is Cross-Buy, so you’ll get to download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions at no extra cost. All the trophies will unlock naturally as you progress through the game, with the last one popping on level 26. The lists include 11 Gold trophies and are very straightforward, but if you need some extra tips, you can check out this Xatrom Command Trophy Guide.

Xatrom Command Review

Xatrom Command was disappointingly generic, and I particularly didn’t like how the game blocked aiming to only 8 axes instead of using the full 360 degrees available on the analog sticks. The level design was also too simple for its own good. Xatrom Command is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $5.99 purchase will allow you to download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.

This Xatrom Command review is based on a PlayStation copy provided by Ratalaika Games.
