Outer Terror from Ratalika Games, VoxPop Games, and Salt and Pixel is a top-down horde shooter on PS5. Learn more in our Outer Terror review!

Outer Terror from Ratalaika Games, VoxPop Games, and Salt and Pixel is a top-down horde shooter on PlayStation 5. This one has you going up against large groups of otherwordly cosmic creatures. You’ll be selecting from one of the available stories: The Gray Death, Kill Switch, Other Side, Frost Bite, or Incident Report. Once you make your choice, the next step will be to select a character. The cast includes Albert, Grey, Lily, Allen, Samad, Cassie, Kaja, Bobby, Ahnah, and Paul. Each character will have a different main weapon, so be sure to try them so that you can find the one that is right for you.

Outer Terror Review - 1

Once you get started, you’ll control your character with the left analog stick and aim and shoot with the right one. Sure, your character will automatically attack enemies, but aiming will be very helpful when things get a bit too crowded. You can dash with the L2 button. The L1 and R1 buttons will allow you to use your items. The Square button will allow you to interact. Your special attack is mapped to the R2 button.

As you defeat enemies, your character will get to level up. Leveling up is important since it will allow you to gain new weapons as well as add some perks that should help to make things a bit easier. You only have 8 carry slots, so you must make every pick count! Some of these will have an additional carry cost, so you won’t be able to equip everything you find. You can choose from the available perks by pressing the Triangle, Circle, and X buttons as needed.

The money you collect can be used to purchase upgrades for your character to help during subsequent runs. These include boosting your overall health, adding a grenade, Molotov cocktail, or chainsaw, boosting weapon damage, increasing fire rate, or adding the possibility of wielding another main weapon. You can also add special ammo for your main weapon, with the ammo options being fire, knockback, freeze, bleed, and explosive.

And now, let’s talk about the trophies! Outer Terror has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to aim for. Since this one is a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5 console, you can download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own trophy list. Each list will have 2 Bronze trophies, 4 Silver trophies, and 10 Gold trophies for you to aim for. The objectives include unlocking an item in the workshop, unlocking all items from the workshop, defeating each boss and completing each volume, collecting all books in The Grey Death, completing Kill Switch in under 15 minutes, and completing Frost Bite without letting the furnace go under 10%, to name some examples. If you need some extra help, you can check out this Outer Terror Trophy Guide.

Outer Terror Review - 3

Outer Terror is a top-down horde shooter in which you’ll be going up against large groups of otherwordly cosmic creatures. It expands on what most horde shooters are doing these days since, along with allowing you to obtain perks by leveling up, you’ll be exploring levels with landmarks and objectives to complete, including some sidequests along the way. With five chapters to complete, 10 characters to play as, and some upgrades to unlock along the way, you’ll be playing for around 3-4 hours or so before you can add a new Platinum trophy to your collection. Outer Terror is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $9.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
