The Land Beneath Us from Dear Villagers and FairPlay Studios is a turn-based roguelite dungeon crawler rooted in Welsh mythology. Check out our The Land Beneath Us review!

The Land Beneath Us from Dear Villagers and FairPlay Studios is a turn-based roguelite dungeon crawler rooted in Welsh mythology. You’ll be going on a journey through the Underworld known as Annwn as you try to give it your all and use your abilities. You’re the Ultimate Soul Harvester (U.S.H), an entity built by The Creator. By going into the Underworld, you’ll be tasked with gathering Souls. By making the most of your weapons, skills, and wits, you’ll be able to plan your tactics as you try to stay one step ahead of your opponents.

After booting up the game, you’ll be greeted by the main PC, who will inform you that The Creator is currently MIA. This is why the emergency protocol was activated after a distress signal was received from deep down. The main PC will show you a video left behind by The Creator that should only be used in case of an emergency such as this one. This is how you learn why Souls are so important for the well-being of humanity. It seems The Creator was abducted right in the middle of recording his video, so time is very much of the essence, and you must jump into action right away!

Since this is your first system activation, the main PC will gladly walk you down the basics so that you have a better understanding of what it is that you can and can’t do. Once you jump into the tutorial, you’ll gain control of U.S.H. You can move through each room by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, which will allow U.S.H. to move one square at a time. When this happens, enemies in the room will also move or perform an action depending on their intent. Knowing what their movement and attack ranges are will be a must if you want to survive for as long as possible during each one of your runs!

The equipment on each slot of U.S.H. will be used to attack in the direction that it is equipped on the wheel. This means that if you want to attack with what’s stored on the left of the wheel, then you’ll need to walk left. If you grab equipment that is different from what is currently equipped on that slot, then said item will replace the previously equipped one. If you collect the same equipment as the currently equipped item, then it will be upgraded, thus boosting its performance. You can work on completing quests as you play The Land Beneath Us so that you can be rewarded.

By pressing the R button, you’ll go into Inspector Mode. When Inspector Mode is activated, you’ll move a cursor over the playing, which you can then use to gain additional information on the available elements, such as enemies or gates – more on gates below. When you find an enemy, checking it with Inspection Mode will allow you to learn more about its name, overall health points, and attack power. As you move through the room, you’ll notice tiles marked in red and yellow. Red tiles will let you know the reach of your attacks. Yellow tiles will signal the attack of your opponents. Because of this, you might want to skip your turn with the Y button so that you can wait for your opponent to make its move.

With this one being a roguelite dungeon crawler, you’re going to have to pay attention to the different icons that will mark where each gate you run into will take you. The gate types are weapon, gold, relic, soul, heal, high level monster, face the lord, and event. A weapon gate will allow you to form a random weapon, which you can then equip to U.S.H. A gold gate will lead to a room where you can loot some extra gold. Relic rooms will, of course, grant you a relic. A relic is a special item that will add a bonus to your run. You could end up choosing between common ones, such as Auto Loot System, which will destroy all breakables in the room so that you can earn extra gold and Souls. You could be lucky and find an extra rare relic like Caltrop so that, when you knockback an enemy, you deal an extra 5 points of damage. Or perhaps you can be really lucky and find an epic relic like Final Core, which revives you a single time with full HP after you die.

Soul gates will allow you to gather additional Souls for that run. A heal gate is important since you’ll get to heal your wounds and recover some of your lost health, which is crucial if you want to continue to extend your current run. If you go into an event gate, then you’ll experience a special story-related interaction. Run into the Blacksmith, and you can spend your gold to improve your weapons. Or maybe you find a handy weapons merchant so that you can use your gold to trade for a powerful weapon. A high level monster gate will send you into combat with an elite enemy that will pack a punch. Defeat it, and you’ll be greatly rewarded. As for the face the lord gate, it’s the one that will send you into a boss fight.

The Land Beneath Us Review - 3

As is to be expected of a roguelite, you won’t be able to complete your journey during your first run. This is why it’s important that you make the most of the Souls you collect during each run. Once back at the lab, you’ll be able to spend your hard-earned Souls to improve your stats and abilities, which will certainly make a difference during subsequent runs. What can you upgrade with Souls? You could boost the armor for U.S.H. by adding some extra HP, increasing the amount of gold dropped by enemies, or increasing how much gold you have when starting a run. There’s also the option of using a special currency to upgrade other stuff, such as lowering the Souls cost for upgrades or adding an auto repair that heals 10% of your max HP after clearing a room. Gold can be used during each run to pay for the cost of opening the treasure chests that you can find during your runs. These can reward you with weapons or bonus relics.

The Land Beneath Us is a turn-based roguelite dungeon crawler rooted in Welsh mythology. After The Creator goes missing, the Ultimate Soul Harvester (U.S.H) is activated and sent on a mission through the Underworld known as Annwn. You’ll have to take on this journey one step at a time – quite literally – since when you move, or attack, all enemies in the room will perform an action. If you don’t pay attention, you could end up cornering yourself one step before all enemies blitz you. As you take on each run, you’ll collect gold that you can spend on upgrading weapons, unlocking additional relics, opening chests, and more. Collect Souls, and you’ll get to trade them for permanent upgrades that can make subsequent runs a bit easier. The Land Beneath Us is out on Nintendo Switch with a $14.99 price tag.
