PO’ed: Definitive Edition from Nightdive Studios is a revamped take on a first-person shooter classic. Learn more in our PO’ed: Definitive Edition review!

PO’ed: Definitive Edition from Nightdive Studios is a revamped take on a first-person shooter classic. PO’ed was originally released way back in 1995, which means it was aiming at paying homage to genre classics such as DOOM and QUAKE, which is not a bad thing! Thanks to this new 2024 release, we get to experience a reworked version of the game with updated graphics, antialising, a boosted framerate clocking in at 60 FPS for a smoother experience, as well as refined controls for this console generation.

PO’ed: Definitive Edition Review - 1

For this action-packed first-person shooter, you’ll be tasked with defending your spaceship, which has been overrun by aliens who have annihilated everyone else. You’re a chef who must give it your all as you try to make the most of your jetpack and weapons to make all enemies go boom. All you have to worry about is shooting at anything that moves, regardless of shape, color, or size. That shouldn’t be too hard to do, right?

Since this release is called PO’ed: Definitive Edition, we’re probably getting some other quality-of-life improvements on top of what has already been mentioned, right? And you’d be correct! We’re getting some bugs squashed that have lived for decades in the original release, widescreen support, rebalanced gameplay, and even an in-game achievement system with 15 achievements for you to work on – more on these in a bit.

PO’ed: Definitive Edition Review - 2

There are four different difficulty settings for you to choose from: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard. As a first-person shooter from the 1990s, this one has to have some funny names for each of the aforementioned options, and they are as follows: I Like to Watch, I Am Over 30, I Have Arthritis In My Fingers, I Don’t Eat Quiche, and the last one is I Live In Hell’s Kitchen. The higher you go, the harder it will be to stay alive since enemies will certainly pack a punch! Be sure to check high and low to find all health pickups that can allow you to keep going for as long as possible. Which one will you choose for this very important mission on Nintendo Switch?

With the game being a first-person shooter, you’ll be taking control of your character with the left analog stick as you use the right one to aim and look around. You can use your weapon by pressing the ZR button. The L and R buttons will allow you to quickly toggle between your weapons. Jumping is mapped to the ZL button. Once you grab yourself a jetpack, you’ll be able to toggle it with the Y button. Oh, and you can interact by pressing the B button. You also have the option of enabling motion controls thanks to the power of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, and you can customize the X and Y sensitivity to find the combination that works for you.

What weapons will you be using to destroy the alien invaders as you try to hold on for dear life? You’ll start out with a heavy-duty and always reliable frying pan. You’ll also get your hands on knives to throw at enemies from a safer distance, a mighty flamethrower that can help cut through enemy lines, or a rocket launcher for when you need that extra oomph. Or maybe you want a drill so that you can get up close and personal and tear enemies a new one?

As for the aforementioned in-game achievements system, the objectives that you’ll be taking on include completing the spiral, solving a specific puzzle that I won’t spoil here, completing the game on any difficulty, doing so on the Very Hard difficulty setting, beating the game in under 20 minutes – good luck with that one! -getting a perfect kill count in any level, acquiring the jetpack, acquiring all weapons, and acquiring all of the ammo and health upgrades, to name some examples.
