Fishing Break from Ultimate Games and Roofdog Games brings us a colorful arcade-style experience on Nintendo Switch. As you go on your boat, you’ll take on 8 different locations with 22 fishing spots in order to try and catch the biggest fish possible. There are hundreds of different fishes for you to try and catch. These include elemental fishes with grass, electric, fire, ice, dark, or light properties to them. The game was originally released on mobile, and it’s now made the jump to Nintendo’s console.

Fishing Break Review - 1

Your journey will begin at the humble Village Pond early in the morning. This location will allow you to get the hang of things as you learn the basics and start to get your fishing on. Fishing Break can be played either with the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or by using the console’s touchscreen when playing in Portable or Tabletop Mode or if you’re playing on a Nintendo Switch Lite console.

For each fishing spot, you’ll be able to work on completing missions to gain coins and stars. For example, in the Village Pond, you’ll be asked to catch 5 fish of any sort, as well as sell 50 coins worth of fish. As an extra mission, you’ll need to catch a goldfish. The stars that you collect are important for the gameplay loop since they will allow you to unlock new fishing spots.

Fishing Break Review - 2

You’ll be throwing your fishing line into the water either with the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or by swiping right on the console’s touchscreen. After that, you’ll need to reel the line when you get a bite. As you press the A button or spin your finger around on the touchscreen to reel in a potential catch, you’ll have to pay attention to the fish since it will try to fight its way out of becoming someone’s dinner. You don’t want the line to break!

With the coins that you collect, you’ll be able to upgrade your gear to boost your odds of catching bigger and better fish. You can boost attack by, for example, improving your starting wood branch into a wood rod. Reel speed can be improved so that you can increase how fast you can reel in a fish. Line length can also be upgraded so that you can have a longer line to catch fish deeper in the water. Something else you can upgrade is your cast distance since you start with only 15 meters, which is not that good.
