Besiege from Spiderling Studios and Ultimate Games brings the physics-building strategy game to Nintendo Switch. Learn more in our Besiege review!

Besiege from Spiderling Studios and Ultimate Games brings the physics-building strategy game to Nintendo Switch. You’ll be working on constructing mechanical machines that can destroy your enemies and bring down castles. The game features a 55-level campaign as well as the option of experimenting in sandbox environments. You’ll build tanks, helicopters, catapults, mechs, and more. As you work on building them, you’ll also have the possibility of uploading your creations to the Workshop or downloading what gamers from around the world have built.

You can play the game either by using the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or by using the console’s touchscreen when playing in Portable or Tabletop Mode or if using a Nintendo Switch Lite. This allows you to tap your way to victory. When using the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, you’ll choose from the available options on the bottom of the screen by using the D-Pad. You’ll then move a cursor on the screen with the left analog stick and confirm your choice with the A button. Undo an action with the L button or redo it with the R button. Once you’re happy with your build, press the – button to see how it performs.

Before placing a block, you’ll be able to rotate it by pressing the ZR button and using the left analog stick. You can also flip a block by pressing the ZR and X buttons. There are also revolving joints, such as hinges, swivels, ballpoints, and axles. Adding steering hinges will allow you to steer your machine. You can also add a steering block. Another option for you is to use pistons. Torque steering can also help you once you set up your machine and decide on its speed.

Want your machine to fly? Then you should add some hot air balloons to raise your machine. Hot air balloons will allow you to raise or lower your machine by pressing up or down on the D-Pad. Add balloons to your contraption to make it hover a bit over the ground. The more balloons you add, the more fun you can have! You can build sturdier machines by adding braces. You should also work on building cross patterns to make your machines more durable. And if you ever need to build a contraption that can grab something, you can add a grabber block or a vacuum block.

Besiege can be as easy or challenging as you want it to be, thanks to the included cheats, which you can easily access by pausing the action and choosing the ones you want to activate. There’s one for ignoring bounds. Another one will allow you to have infinite ammo. One cheat will make you completely invincible. What if you activate a cheat so that there is no gravity? You can activate a cheat that gives you explosive cannon balls, which can be used to wreak havoc. The last cheat is for picking up objects by using the cursor.

This release features an in-game achievements system for you to work on as you enjoy Besiege. The objectives you’ll be working on include completing a campaign level in under 2 minutes, getting hit by lightning, setting yourself on fire, defeating 1,000 AI units, putting out a burning block by using fire, reaching enough attitude to freeze your machine, and beating the campaign. There are also some other objectives I won’t be discussing here since they could be considered a bit of a spoiler.

You can customize your experience by going into the settings menu and mixing and matching a series of options. Choose between a Beauty or Performance Mode for the game’s graphics, increase or decrease the field of view, go with a 30 or 60 frames-per-second setting, activate or deactivate motion blur, activate or deactivate depth of field, activate or deactivate blood, and choose if tooltips and tutorials will be shown, to name some examples.
