CATO: Buttered Cat from PLAYISM and Team Woll is a colorful puzzle platformer with an interesting twist. You know how they say that cats always land on their feet? And how toast always seems to land buttered side down? Well… what would happen if you strap a piece of buttered toast to a cat’s back? It leads to a paradox, with an infinitely spinning floating butter-cat in perpetual motion! A cat and a piece of toast floating through the air is definitely not something that I was expecting to experience on Nintendo Switch.

CATO: Buttered Cat Review - 1

The pair go out on an adventure after the milk runs out. CATO wants to drink some delicious milk, and Toast needs milk to be able to create the smooth butter that goes all over its body. While taking on more than 200 levels in total – split into 140+ main levels and 60+ side levels – you’ll be able to unlock dozens of skins for CATO and Toast so that you can customize their looks. The game can be played on your own or with up to two players in local co-op.

When playing this game on your own, you’ll be using the left analog stick to move CATO left, right, up, or down. As for Toast, you can make it jump left by pressing the L or ZL buttons or right by pressing the R or ZR buttons. Press the A button to make Toast change directions. When attached to CATO, you can split Toast from it by pressing the Y button, which is sometimes needed here and there for puzzle-solving purposes.

Pressing the B button will allow CATO and Toast to jump when they’re together. You’ll have to make the most of the pair’s abilities to complete the different puzzles you’ll run into. For example, CATO can climb up walls as well as squeeze through tight spots. Toast, on the other hand, can stick to walls in order to wall jump. Toast can also charge up its jumps by pressing and holding down the L, ZL, R, and ZR buttons as needed, which allows it to perform longer, more powerful jumps.

While the duo’s jumps basically allow them to float through the air as they please, this doesn’t mean you’ll be able to just jump through each area to get to the exit. There are some paradox walls that won’t allow CATO and Toast to progress unless they split and find a way to get to the other side separately. To complete each level, along with getting CATO and Toast from point A to point B, you’ll also need to collect the energy needed to open up each portal that will teleport them to the next area.
