Call of the Sea from Out of the Blue and Raw Fury is a first-person adventure that has now made its way to Nintendo Switch. The game places you in the role of Norah, a woman who suffers from a peculiar disease. The game takes place in 1934, on an island in the South Pacific. You’re following the tracks of your husband’s expedition. Harry left a year ago in search of a cure for your condition. While he had been in communication here and there, everything recently came to a halt, which means something bad has happened to him! You decide it’s time to set out on a mission to try to find out more. You have three days to find your husband, since that’s when the ship that took you to the island will return. Miss that window, and you’ll be left behind!

As you make your way to the island, you’ll get to see how the disease is affecting you, which is why you end up covering up your hands with a pair of leather gloves that help to conceal some of your symptoms. Exploring the island will slowly allow you to piece together what the previous expedition had found. This information will prove to be valuable, since it will aid you in solving the different puzzles that you’ll run into. Will you manage to piece it all together and find out what happened to your husband? The voice actress for Norah is Cissy Jones, who has lent her talent to many games, such as American Arcadia, Firewatch, Baldur’s Gate III, Dead Island 2, The Walking Dead: Season 1, Wayfinder, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, as well as action game Darksiders III, to name some examples.

 

As your adventure begins, you’ll be taking control of Norah by using the left analog stick to explore each location, using the right analog stick to look around as needed. There’s the option of pressing the ZR button to toggle between walking and running. Press the A button to interact. That way, you’ll be able to take a closer look at the objects you find, rotating them with the analog stick as you use the ZL and ZR buttons to zoom in and out. Be sure to listen to everything that Norah has to say about the things you find, since that way she’ll be able to add the relevant data to her journal!

You can press the X button to open up your journal. It’s there that you’ll be able to review the information you’ve obtained during your adventure, the notes you’ve taken, and the logs that tell the tale of your journey. You’ll put it to good use as soon as the starting cutscene is over and you find yourself on the ship that is taking you to the island. Once you open up your journal, you’ll find a picture with a code that is required since it’s the combination to open your suitcase!

 

As you take your time to explore each section of the island, searching for the info needed to solve each puzzle, you’ll also be working on getting the many, many collectibles that the game has to offer. If you like to 100% the games that you play, you’ll have to get all of the notes and log entries for your journal, which is why I mentioned that you should make sure that you rotate and zoom in on all objects while allowing Norah to complete her dialogue for that particular item. If you get to the end of your adventure and are still missing some collectibles, you’ll be able to make good use of the very useful chapter select feature to give it another go.

The game offers some accessibility options in order for you to tailor your experience. These include activating or deactivating a crosshair, changing the handwritten font for the journal, activating a detection icon that will make it easier to spot items you can interact with, smooth camera rotation, head bobbing, photosensitivity protection that enables or disables flashing lights, closed captions, and motion blur. Call of the Sea is out on Nintendo Switch with a $19.99 price tag.
