Hot Wheels Let’s Race: Ultimate Speed from GameMill Entertainment, Mattel, and Bamtang Games brings us a colorful, all-ages racer on Nintendo’s console. As the name suggests, this one is based on the animated TV series that premiered on Netflix last year, which already has three full seasons available for your streaming pleasure. You’ll be choosing between six of the show’s characters – Coop, Spark, Mac, Brights, Axle, and Cruise – as you take on the available game modes, which can even end up having you go at it against big bosses in action-packed battles!

As you can tell from the trailer and screens in this Hot Wheels Let’s Race: Ultimate Speed review, the game is definitely bringing the whole Hot Wheels experience to life, with tracks that you could certainly build on your own by using the different Hot Wheels pieces you’re familiar with. No, I’m not saying it would be cheap to build them… but at least it’s technically doable! Speaking of which, along with the racing side of the equation, this release also allows you to take your time as you craft your very own tracks, which you can then race on your own or with up to four players in total thanks to the local co-op option.

 

After you jump onto the track, you’ll be using the left analog stick to steer your vehicle, as you accelerate by pressing the ZR button and drift by pressing the ZL button as needed. If you have to hit the brakes, you can do so by pressing the A button. Get a better look at the racers behind you by checking the rearview mirror with the X button. Race over enough energy pads to charge up your special car power. Once it’s ready to go, you can activate it by pressing the B button to unleash it. At the start of a race, you can press and hold down the ZR button to control your initial acceleration, so that you can get your charge into the right spot of the bar to perform a boost.

Once you run into a boss, you’ll have to not only pay attention to the action on the track, but also to what each boss is doing as it attacks you and the rest of the racers. You’ll have to collect items to be able to attack a boss. The more items that you manage to collect, the more points that you’ll gain. Just aim at the boss and launch all of the stuff that you’ve collected so that you can deal some solid damage!

Each of the vehicles that you can pilot will have different stat values for handling, speed, and acrobatics for you to consider. These will change how they perform while racing, so be sure to give as many of them a try so that you can start to spot your favorites! And yes, these cars are most certainly based on the real Hot Wheels models that you can add to your physical collection, which is something that fans are certainly going to dig.
