Chico’s Rebound from Daikon Games brings us a sequel that mixes top-down adventuring with brick breaking gameplay. Learn more in our Chico’s Reboud review!

Chico’s Rebound from Daikon Games brings us a sequel that mixes top-down adventuring with brick breaking gameplay. What this means is that you’ll be playing through segments that feel like they would be right at home on the Game Boy alongside The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, as well as through brick breaking levels that pay homage to the classics such as Arkanoid and Breakout. You’re Chico the Chipmunk, and will be joined by a new friend Beeatrice the Bee, as you explore a peculiar tower with many secrets for you to uncover. The tower literally popped out of nowhere, and the dungeon inside begs to be explored!

Chico's Rebound Review - 1

Once you enter, Beeatrice realizes there’s a lot of information to gather about this peculiar tower. She decides to call it the Celestial Tower, given all the moon and star decorations in it. You won’t be able to enter the first brick breaking level without using a Star Token… and you don’t have any on you! The good news is that there’s a treasure chest in one of the nearby rooms, and it will contain exactly one Star Token. The sign next to it says it’s a gift. Odd, right?

As your new adventure begins, you’ll be taking control of Chico by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, interacting as needed by pressing the A button. Once you enter a brick breaking stage, you’ll be using your trusty giant walnut to have it bounce around the walls and ceiling as you try to destroy all of the bricks on the screen. You’ll need to act fast as you aim to send it back into play without having it touch the bottom of the screen.

These levels are known as Rebound, and that’s why this is Chico’s Rebound! you’ll still control Chico by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you move left and right at the bottom of the screen. Press the A button to prepare your shot, and aim with the left analog stick or the D-Pad before you press the A button again to launch the walnut into play. What if the walnut is too far away from you and you won’t be able to make it in time? Then you can press the A button as it bounces around to make Chico dive in one last effort to try and catch it!

Chico's Rebound Switch Review - 2

You see, instead of having the walnut bounce when it touches Chico – you know, as if Chico were a paddle in a regular brick breaking game you might have played before- you’ll get to catch the walnut when you come into contact with it. This will allow you to carefully plan your next shot, so that you can make every single one count! You have three walnuts in total to clear each stage. You’ll get a Star Token for clearing a level, and you can get an extra one if you manage to reach the score goal by making the most of the

As you progress further into the tower, you’ll start to run into power-ups that will help you succeed. Once collected, you can activate a power-up by pressing the L button. These will include, for instance, a fire power-up that will light up the walnut so that it can burn down green blocks or wooden blocks. There’s also a

Exploring each area and completing the brick breaking levels will reward you with sunflower seeds. These will act as the in-game currency, and you’ll be able to spend them at Budgit’s shop. You can trade your hard-earned sunflower seeds to change the way the walnut looks, switching it into a chestnut, a solid gold sphere, a tennis ball, a watermelon, a bee ball, and more. You can also add new interfaces for the Rebound levels, which will change the display where your current score, goal, combo, and number of remaining walnuts are shown.

There’s also an in-game achievement for you to work on if you’re the type of gamer who wants to 100% games. The list of feats to complete include clear a level by using a single shot, making anyn purchase at Budgit’s shop, spending 1000 seeds total at Budgit’s shop, obtaining your first gem, clearing a special run, having 3 flying keys following you at once, solving all Stone Head puzzles, breaking all mushroom blocks at once in Mushroom Mines 1-3, visting every floor in the Celestial Tower, defeating each boss, and completing the game, to name some examples.

Chico's Rebound Switch Review - 4

This one is a follow-up to the old-school-inspired puzzle adventure Chico and the Magic Orchards DX, which I recently got a chance to review on Nintendo Switch. The good news is that you don’t need to have played Chico and the Magic Orchards DX to be able to jump into this one… but you should definitely play the prequel as well! Chico’s Rebound launches today on Nintendo Switch with a $7.99 price tag.
