File Destined from Dolores Entertainment and Metavision Studio brings us a first-person psychological horror experience on PlayStation 5. For this Rated M for Mature journey, you’ll be stepping into the shoes of Oliver Hamilton from the Ohio Police Department and will be working on what is supposed to be your final case. What seemed to be a simple case ends up being more convoluted than expected, and you’ll need to work on identifying who is behind one of the country’s most closely watched murder cases. Even the smallest of items could make a difference in the end, so be sure to search everywhere and take a closer look at everything that you find. Unfortunately, you’re not alone, as there are evil spirits that lurk in the dark!

All that you’ll have for lighting your path is an old lighter that will help to break through the darkness… even if only for short bursts. You’ll need to be careful as you move around, since you could find yourself completely surrounded by the darkness if your lighter goes out at the worst time possible. You’ll have to make every second count, because danger can pop up at any given time.

 

You’ll get to learn the basics after the AI, Liz, welcomes you to the crime scene simulator. Since the game is played from a first-person perspective, you’ll be taking control of Oliver by using the left analog stick, as you use the right analog stick to look around you as needed. You can interact with objects by pressing the X button. Crouch by pressing in on the left analog stick, so that you can go through tighter spaces and make less noise.

Zoom by pressing the L2 button so that you can get a better view of things. It’s during the tutorial that you’ll gain access to the aforementioned lighter. Ignite the lighter by pressing the R2 button. Be careful, because if you turn too fast while the lighter is on, its light might disappear without warning, thus probably leaving you in complete darkness! Oh, and did I mention that it needs lighter fluid to function?

You can open up your inventory by pressing down on the D-Pad. This will allow you to review all of the items you’ve collected, the entries you have added so far to your journal, as well as the evidence that you’ve found. You can get a short description of each item that has been added to your inventory, in case you need a refresher.

This release has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection. The list is split into 11 Bronze trophies, 11 Silver trophies, and 6 Gold trophies for you to work on. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? Some of the objectives to complete include finishing the tutorial, igniting the lighter 5 times, successfully picking the lock on a chest for the first time, refilling the lighter 4 times, locating a knife, finding all cigarette packs in the game, finding 4 fingerprints, finding the medication, and finding all keys scattered in the game, to name some examples.

The game was originally released on Steam back in 2023, and it’s now made the jump to Sony’s current-gen console. It’s a short one that shouldn’t take you more than two hours total to see from start to finish, so do be ready for a short journey. File Destined launches today on PlayStation 5.
