Pro Jank Footy from Powerbomb Games and Tinker Town is an over-the-top roguelite arcade comedy sports game on Nintendo Switch. It brings us a spin on the sport with Australian Footy rules, and that means having 36 players on the field – 18 players for each side – playing on a large oval field, and a very particular ball type. But the game also plays with the fact that if someone hears the term Australian Footy rules… that can probably be anything as it goes through their mind. Because of this, the rules will always be changing, and the action on the screen will reflect this at all times. Just take a look at the trailer and screens in this Pro Jank Footy review, and you’ll get a good idea of what you’re about to get yourself into.

The game offers a single-player Season Mode, as well as a fast-paced and crazy local multiplayer option for you to take on. For Season Mode, you’ll be diving into a full season as you make the most of deckbuilding gameplay mechanics as you unlock and customize power-ups to be able to go further and further as you try to win it all.

You’ll be taking control of each one of your team members by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad to run around the field as quickly as possible as you try to score a goal or keep your opponents from doing so. You can pass the ball by tapping the A button, and you can kick the ball by pressing and holding down the A button. When on the offense, you can fend off an opponent by tapping the B button as needed.

 

If you’re playing defense, then tapping the B button will make your character perform a bump. Pressing and holding down the B button will make it perform a tackle. If you manage to tackle an opponent with the ball, then you’ll get a free kick. Tap the A button to jump, so that you can hopefully intercept a pass and catch the ball. Switch between your players by tapping the X button.

If you need an extra dose of speed, you can sprint as you move around the field by pressing and holding down the ZR button. Do know that sprinting, performing bumps, trying to tackle an opponent, or fending off an opponent will drain a bit of your energy bar. The energy bar will restore over time, but you do need to keep an eye on it so that you don’t find yourself without energy at the worst time.

Once a match begins, anything goes! If you manage to score a goal, that will give your opponent the chance to pick a new power-up to put into play, which will give them a chance to score as quickly as possible. The good news? Once they do score a goal, it will be YOUR turn to pick a power-up and try to outsmart and outplay your opponent with some ridiculous options.

But what if you’re not in the mood for all of that? Then you can just go for a regular match without any of the power-ups. If you’re playing with power-ups, you can also try to run into meat pies to obtain a random power-up. Do know that the meat pies might grow a pair of eyes and legs and make a run for it! Some power-up examples include Touchdown, which makes it possible to run into your goals with the ball to score a goal, Debutant, which allows a new player to join the team, 100%, which gives it 100%, Blisters, which reduces your opponents’ kick power, or Party Pies, which makes more meat pies pop over the field.

How many points can you get for each shot you land at goal? If you manage to kick the ball between the middle posts, then you’ll get a goal and will be able to score 6 points. If you kick the ball between one of the main posts and one of the side posts, this will be a behind, and then you’ll only get a single point.

You can play in local Versus Mode, go into Online Mode to duke it out against gamers from around the world, jump into Season Mode to take on a full single-player season, use Watch Mode to simply watch a match, or play Kick to Kick Mode, in which you’ll be kicking the ball over and over again.

There are 11 different teams for you to play as while stepping into 4 different stadiums. The teams include the Salisbury Park Snags, the Port Noarlunga Chips, the South Coast Prawns, the New Team Coming Sooners, the Wattle Ridge Wombats, the Stone Valley Pinks, the Ceduna Doonas, the Freecasle Fizzies, the Londsdale Lifters, the North Problem, and the Cactus Sharks.

We’re getting commentary from Aunty Donna’s Broden Kelly and the creative minds of David Ashby and Dario Russo behind the series Danger 5, and that means that the humor for this one is of a very particular type, definitely steeped in Australian joy.
