Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Legendary Edition from Cygames and Arc System Works brings us the definitive edition of the fast-paced fighting game now on Nintendo Switch 2. Thanks to this, we have access to all 40 playable characters right from the get-go, including characters from the action RPG Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok. The game offers a single-player Story Mode, as well as classic options like Arcade Mode, Training Mode, Versus Mode, and Survival Mode. While you can go online and test your skills against gamers from around the world, this will require that you have a current Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Before talking about what’s new for Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Legendary Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, you should definitely check out my Granblue Fantasy: Versus Rising review on PlayStation 5, which I had a chance to work on back at the end of 2023. This will give you some insight into how the game works and what you can expect from its combat.
What’s new for the Nintendo Switch 2 version when compared to, say, the PlayStation 5 version? Thanks to Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Legendary Edition on Nintendo’s current-gen hybrid console, you’ll be able to enjoy Gyro Versus, a new mode in which players can perform combos and unleash abilities by shaking the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2. You can also battle locally using the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game by connecting two nearby consoles.

In order to allow more and more people to dive into this fun fighting game, Cygames introduced new control schemes so that gamers of all skill levels could take this one for a spin. Thanks to this, now, along with the classic Manual Controls, your additional options for duking it out will be Smart Controls and Super Ultimate Controls.
Smart Controls maintain the basics of Manual Controls, while adding automation to streamline the overall gameplay experience. Thanks to this, you’ll be able to press the same button after landing an attack so that you can unleash a powerful combo and chain into skills. These actions are based on the current situation, taking into account your distance from your opponent and whether your attack was blocked, letting you mix things up on the fly. And yes, you can still input specific commands mid-combo to add an extra layer of strategy. To balance things out, choosing Smart Controls will reduce your max HP, lower the damage dealt, as well as reduce SBA gauge gain.

And then we have Super Ultimate Controls. Super Ultimate Controls will automate movement, attacks, projectiles, and maneuvers, with everything performed by holding down the attack button. Because this goes several steps further than what Smart Controls have to offer, you won’t be able to use Super Ultimate Controls when fighting in online matches, but you’ll be able to use them in Arcade Mode, Training Mode, Survival Mode, as well as in local Versus Mode.
