Review: Red Dead Redemption – Undead Nightmare DLC

October 29, 2010 | | 22 Comments

Marston will be doing a lot of this during his adventures in Undead Nightmare.

I don’t often (or ever) purchase DLC. But, when I first heard about Undead Nightmare DLC for one of my favorite games of the year, Red Dead Redemption, I knew I’d purchase it. But should you?

Short answer: Absolutely.

Long answer: if you enjoyed Red Dead Redemption, and are looking for a Halloween-y themed game with terrific graphics, a great story, and some of the funniest dialog this side of GLaDOS, then you should run to your PS3, go to PlayStation Store and download this game right now. It is completely and utterly worth it.

After you download and install Undead Nightmare, you’re greeted with probably one of the greatest opening cutscenes in history. I laughed out loud a couple of times. Undead Nightmare plays itself off as a B-movie parody, and it’s pitch perfect. The laughter continues during Marshall Johnson’s mission, when a cutscene has John Marston return to Armadillo, and have a conversation with Armadillo’s resident homophobic, antisemitic racist bigot, Herbert Moon. After Moon launches into a tirade about how “Jewish British Catholic homosexuals” are responsible for the zombies infesting RDR’s world, he then walks away, and is almost immediately attacked by three zombies is by far the funniest part of the game.

Harmonix losing some respect points with Rock Band 3

October 26, 2010 | | 15 Comments

Harmonix’s flagship brand, Rock Band 3, released yesterday. For fans of the music / rhythm game, and its many iterations, this game is the culmination of years of work and thousands (over 2,000 now) of songs. Yes, Rock Band 3 introduces new modes,  new instruments, a refined experience, and a partridge in a pear tree. One of the greatest features of Harmonix’s games is how much they seem to go to bat for the consumer by trying to provide ways to make their Rock Band experience that much more enjoyable. One of the ways Harmonix has done this is allowing song imports: Rock Band 1 imported 55 of 58 songs into Rock Band 2 for a $5 fee; Lego Rock Band imported all songs into Rock Band 2 for a $10 fee; any of the track packs, or the AC/DC pack imported into Rock Band for no extra fee. The only drawback was The Beatles Rock Band was not importable into other games, considering the licensing it took to get the Beatles into Rock Band in the first place, I don’t begrudge Harmonix for that at all.

Play, Create, Share – The future of gaming?

September 21, 2010 | | 11 Comments

Sony's pioneer of Play, Create, Share the ever cute Sackboy.

Not so long ago, I picked up the recent Playstation 3 title known as ModNation Racers. A game that comes under Sony’s ‘Play, Create, Share’ marketing campaign.

This is a campaign that promotes the idea of videogames that feature some sort of tool set for users to create their own content for the game and share it with other gamers.

The first game to be released under this banner was the fantastic ‘LittleBigPlanet’; a game which allowed players to create their own levels to share with the community.

Of course, it was more complex than that. LittleBigPlanet’s tool set let you do much more than create a simple Mario-style level to run though.

In fact, the scope was massive. Simple to learn and complex to master, LittleBigPlanet’s tools allowed users to make vehicles, create monsters, recreate their favourite movies, other video games and a variety of different settings.

What some thought would allow for little more than running and jumping from platform to platform was now being used to create scenes from ‘Shadow Of The Colossus’, the opening to ‘Final Fantasy 7’ and even an R-Type style shooter.

Risks of Activating Your PSN Account on Others PS3’s

August 24, 2010 | | 65 Comments

As many people know, you can activate up to 5 PS3’s with your PSN account. I’ve recently hit a situation where I needed Sony to reset my account to zero PS3’s so that I could activate my newest console and … Read More

The Six Weirdest PlayStation Ads

July 21, 2010 | | 15 Comments

No matter what Xbox fanboys say, Microsoft can never top Sony in the ad department. Most of the ads for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 were rather creepy or revolting. And this post will highlight (or lowlight) the best (or worst) of them.

No. 6: “You’re saying that the PlayStation is Jesus? I’m so confused.”

The Vatican did object to this ad, which only circulated in Italy, where 90% of the population is Catholic, and most of the people who saw it were deeply offended. But, in all honesty, this looks like the MySpace profile pic of a creepy priest.

Too be honest, I have no idea who Sony is trying to appeal to. The caption,  PlayStation: 10 anni di passione, translates to ‘1o years of passion’. A seemingly innocent caption. But, when coupled with the crown of thorns, and the film ‘The Passion of the Christ‘, which was published by uber-Catholic and uber-prejudiced Mel Gibson, it’s revealed that the ad is saying that the PlayStation is Jesus. And that’s not cool, especially in Italy.

It’s also, incredibly creepy.

Six Thoughts on Red Dead Redemption

June 27, 2010 | | 5 Comments

A few days ago, I finished up the story missions for Red Dead Redemption. And I must say, I was impressed. It brought me back to my wide-eyed youth when I was first stunned by just how brilliant video games could be with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004. It is a beautifully written, beautiful looking video game. Now, without further ado, here are my six thoughts on RDR. This post contains spoilers, so please read it at your own risk.

Six Upcoming Games I’m Way Too Excited About

June 16, 2010 | | 14 Comments

With E3 just getting underway, I’ve decided to look back on games that teased me in the past, that still haven’t been released, with a few more from E3 2010 that have had new details revealed about them. It’s a shame that since there technically hasn’t been an announcement of Grand Theft Auto V or Uncharted 3, because those would definitely be on this list.

I Am Alive

The post-apocalyptic survival game due to hit shelves sometime in before fall 2011, from Ubisoft, takes place after a decimating earthquake strikes Chicago. Originally unveiled at E3 2008, I Am Alive was the victim of multiple delays, and production shifting. Originally from Darkworks, it moved to Ubi Shanghai. Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond was originally involved, but she left in January.

The 2008 trailer makes the game look awesome, but I’ve been disappointed by Ubisoft before (Stupid EndWar. What a waste of money.) and the delays in I Am Alive worry me. There’s also going to be a port to the Wii, and I hope that the Wii port doesn’t tone the game down for the real consoles.

According to the website and press releases, you have to wander around the destroyed Chicago area looking for anything of use, drinking water to stay hydrated, and avoiding other people because they will do anything to get their hands on your supplies.

[Editorial] The PlayStation Network Can Make You “Cool”

June 8, 2010 | | 12 Comments

By Floris O. Pittman Jr. co-writer for PS3blog.net

Out of all of my son’s friends, my son has the coolest dad. Or at least that’s what they all tell him. Why? Well, because I collect comics, toys, and most importantly PS3 games. I also play the games with them, and sometimes let them win. At least that’s what I tell myself. My son is 12 years old and his four closest friends are all 12 to 13. All four of them have PS3’s as well. A couple have Wii’s , however none of them have that “other system.” Two of the four boys had the Xbox 360, but traded them towards a PS3 so they could play with us. My brother and two closest friends all have PS3s as well. Together the nine of us have become even closer friends, age knowing no limits, playing virtually through what is called the PlayStation Network.

This PlayStation Network, known as the PSN, has captivated us for nearly 3 1/2 years. It is constantly updating and changing to become better and better. PSN is the PS3’s online network for multiplayer gaming, communicating with other players, downloading digital media including games and movies, and also for a little place called Home. To access the PSN all you need for your PS3 is an internet connection. As for the cost to use and join the network, well, it’s free. Yes free! You will need to create a unique user name using an email address, and add a password. Then all u need to do is sign in. From there, you can start adding friends, by their user names.
